Fun Mathematics lesson

Our Grade 2s enjoyed completing a Mathematics lesson focussed on Capacity outside in the sandpit. Some great estimations and checking happening here today.

A message from our Sustainability Leaders

We are the Sustainability Leaders who are also the iSea iCare Ambassadors. We had a very productive day on our Term 3 excursion where we went to Namatjira Park in Clayton South. We watched the pond water traps being emptied by the Council workers and we were flabbergasted at all the rubbish collected there. Next we searched for pond creatures and learned about how different chemicals in the water affect the water quality and the pond creatures that live there.

We then drove to Mordialloc Pier and did a big rubbish pick up in the beach carpark, noting the most common types of rubbish found. We couldn’t believe how many cigarette butts we collected. Next we observed the traps there which are the closest rubbish traps to the beach.  We are very keen to continue helping educate OLA students about reducing rubbish and the importance of putting rubbish in the bin. This will prevent it from reaching the beaches and it will help protect our sealife.

We are designing new bin posters for the OLA community and we are looking forward to presenting these soon. We are also producing a short film to educate everyone about selecting the correct bin for the different types of rubbish.

Prep Excursion to Scienceworks

This term, our Prep students have been immersing themselves in the 'Our World' unit, exploring the vital relationship between living things and their environment. As part of this engaging inquiry, they recently visited Scienceworks, where they had the unique opportunity to see their classroom learning come to life. The visit was filled with hands-on activities and interactive exhibits that highlighted the importance of food, water, and habitats for survival. It was an exciting day, where students connected with their natural world, learned about what makes animals special, and discovered how they can care for animals and their homes.

Grade 1/2 Excursion to CERES

As part of our Term Two Religion/Inquiry Unit ‘Creation is All Around Us,’ Grade 1/2 students have been learning about Earth’s resources and how they are used in various ways. Through their investigations, students have come to understand the importance of these resources and our shared responsibility as stewards of creation to care for and use them sustainably. They have explored the concept of sustainability and the necessity of interacting with the environment in a way that preserves its beauty and productivity for future generations.

We were very fortunate this term to have the opportunity to visit CERES School of Nature and Climate in Brunswick East to consolidate our learning! Students joined expert educators on a journey towards zero waste where they built knowledge, fostered connection to the Earth, and learned new skills and actions to avoid waste and respect the Earth’s natural resources. This unit has inspired our young learners to appreciate the natural world and commit to practices that protect and sustain God's creation.

Kilbreda and St Bede's Production of Frozen

Our Grade 3/4 superstars had a blast today at Kilbreda College, enjoying a magical performance of Frozen Jr.

Lamont Book Fair

We are very excited to be hosting a Book Fair this year! Lamont Books is an Australian owned company, they have packed the best books into the Book Fair and aim to bring joy and excitement about books to OLA. On top of that, the Book Fair raises funds or books for our school at the same time!

The Book Fair will be in Brigid Hall and will open before school (8-8:35am) and after school (3:15-3:45pm), starting on Monday 24 June after school and finishing Friday 28 June before school. We will also have it open during Learning Conversations.

There will be a staff member at the Book Fair and families can pay with cash or credit. Families may also purchase books online and pick them up at school. If you wish to do so please follow this link -  https://payments.lamontauthors.com.au/. Please note the link will not open until the afternoon of Monday 24 June.

Building a national picture of child health

Early next term, OLA will participate in the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).

The AEDC is a teacher-completed census (similar to a questionnaire) which provides a comprehensive picture of how children have developed by the time they start their first year of full-time school.

The AEDC is an Australian Government Initiative and is completed nationally every three years. Children do not miss any class time while the AEDC is completed, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information. The data collected through the AEDC is used by schools, communities and governments to better understand children and families’ needs, and identify the services, resources and support they need.

AEDC data is reported at a school, community, state/territory and national level. AEDC results for individual children are not reported and the AEDC is not used as an individual diagnostic tool. Some teachers have found that completing the AEDC made them more aware of the needs of individual children and their class, and that the data was useful for planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing programs.

Participation in the AEDC is voluntary, however the AEDC relies on all schools with children in their first year of full-time school participating in the collection. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census.

To find out more about the AEDC and how it is being used to help children and families visit: www.aedc.gov.au.

Excellence at OLA

We celebrate achievements at OLA every day in the classroom. Outstanding achievement is celebrated at every assembly in the front of the school. Congratulations to all the students who received an award last week.
