What a proud day for us as a school and Parish! Today, Friday 15 August is the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A day for us to remember when Mary, the mother of Jesus, was taken into heaven, body and soul, after she died. Mary’s life and death are a wonderful example of praise and thanksgiving to God.
Whole School Mass
We began our day by gathering together as a faith community to pray and show our gratitude and respect for Mary. This was a wonderful opportunity for us to be with our fellow Parishioners; prayers, readings and jobs were shared between children and adult Parishioners alike. We thank our School Captains and Community Leaders for taking on the responsibilities for leading us in prayer today.
Many comments were also made about the fantastic singing in the Church! We are always so proud of the way our students engage through song but today was truly something special, and was noted by Fr Alan and some of our Parishioners too. A special mention was given to 2MV for singing with confidence even when there were no lyrics to an instrumental piece! You led the way for many of us!
Mary Activities
Teachers took time throughout the day to lead the students in activities to learn a bit more about Mary, our school's namesake. You might see some new, creative displays next time you are onsite!
Fun Fair
Another big highlight of the day was the OLA Fun Fair! Each class had gone to great efforts to plan and organise a stall to share with our school community. Temporary tattoos, popcorn, choc-o-block, basketball competitions, biscuit decorating and lucky dips just to name a few! It was amazing to see the excitement of the children, but also the kindness and manners as they navigated the Fun Fair showing the values we are so proud of at school. Definitely a positive feel to the afternoon.
It was great to see so many families come and join us for the Fun Fair as well! Whether it was purchasing things from the stalls or jumping in to lend a hand, sisters, brothers and cousins looking after each other - this was a lovely celebration of our family partnerships. Thank you for coming along. We even had one child unwell today and without prompting two of his friends in Grade 1 had purchased something to give to him - precious.
The Fun Fair would not have been possible without the items donated from families. Thank you for your generosity. Thank you also for all of your donations of money. The students definitely enjoyed spending it at the Fun Fair. All money raised will go towards Sacred Heart Mission. Sacred Heart Mission is a Victorian not-for-profit organisation providing support to people experiencing homelessness, deep disadvantage and social exclusion. Find out more here. We will let you know soon how much was raised and donated.
On Friday 8 August we celebrated the Feast of Saint Mary of the Cross (Mary Mackillop). Mary MacKillop was the first Australian to be declared a saint.
Mary cared about the people who had no one to look after them such as children in the country who had no school to go to, people who were old and sick, and homeless people. Mary founded the Sisters of St Joseph, who opened many schools, a place for women who had nowhere to live, an orphanage for children who had no parents to look after them and a house where poor people could come and stay. Mary MacKillop taught us to never see a need without trying to do something about it.
We thank our Prep students and teachers for leading us in prayer last Friday.
