đ˘ Real-Life Maths â Learning Beyond the Classroom đđłđ
At St Maryâs, we know that maths isnât just something students learn at schoolâitâs all around us, every day!
Our students are developing important mathematical skills like measuring, estimating, problem-solving and calculatingâand one of the best ways to strengthen these skills is through real-life experiences.
Here are some fun and simple ways families can explore maths at home:
Â
đď¸Â At the Shops:
- Let your child help with budgeting or comparing prices.
- Ask questions like, âWhich is the better deal?â or âHow much change will we get from $10?â
đłÂ In the Kitchen:
- Involve your child in measuring ingredients and setting timers.
- Try doubling or halving a recipe and talk about fractions.
đ On the Road:
- Estimate travel time and distances.
- Use timetables, read maps or calculate fuel usage on longer trips.
đ§ŽÂ Everyday Maths Questions to Ask at Home:
- âHow many slices do we need to cut the cake so everyone gets two?â
- âWhat time do we need to leave to get there by 4:00?â
- âHow many litres of paint will we need for this wall?â
These everyday moments turn maths into something meaningful, fun and usefulâand they help children see that maths truly is a life skill!
We encourage all families to âtalk mathsâ at home, and celebrate mathematical thinking just like you would with reading. After all, maths is everywhere!
