🔢 Real-Life Maths – Learning Beyond the Classroom 🛒🍳🚗
At St Mary’s, we know that maths isn’t just something students learn at school—it’s all around us, every day!
Our students are developing important mathematical skills like measuring, estimating, problem-solving and calculating—and one of the best ways to strengthen these skills is through real-life experiences.
Here are some fun and simple ways families can explore maths at home:
🛍️ At the Shops:
- Let your child help with budgeting or comparing prices.
- Ask questions like, “Which is the better deal?” or “How much change will we get from $10?”
🍳 In the Kitchen:
- Involve your child in measuring ingredients and setting timers.
- Try doubling or halving a recipe and talk about fractions.
🚗 On the Road:
- Estimate travel time and distances.
- Use timetables, read maps or calculate fuel usage on longer trips.
🧮 Everyday Maths Questions to Ask at Home:
- “How many slices do we need to cut the cake so everyone gets two?”
- “What time do we need to leave to get there by 4:00?”
- “How many litres of paint will we need for this wall?”
These everyday moments turn maths into something meaningful, fun and useful—and they help children see that maths truly is a life skill!
We encourage all families to ‘talk maths’ at home, and celebrate mathematical thinking just like you would with reading. After all, maths is everywhere!
