Beth Tyrrell and Hayley Rings
This term in Visual Arts, students across the school have been exploring the exciting world of threads and textiles. From Foundation to Year Six, everyone has been busy creating hands-on textile projects, developing fine motor skills, patience, and creativity along the way.
Alongside their main projects, students have also been working on special pieces for the school concert and thoughtful take-home gifts, giving them a chance to practise design, colour, and stitching skills while creating something meaningful for others.
As we've been using needles and thread, most kids should be able to mend their own uniforms from now on too—you're welcome, parents!
Check out below to see what each year level has been up to.

This term, Foundation students have been busy exploring their creativity with textiles. They began with paper weaving, using oil pastels and watercolours to create colourful patterns before weaving paper strips into looms. Next, they designed and decorated concert accessories, adding beads and thread to make each piece unique.
Looking ahead, students will create wool letters, wrapping their initials in colourful wool and adding extra decorations like sequins and pom poms, building fine motor skills while having fun with colour and pattern.
This term, Year One students have been busy getting creative with textiles! We started with colourful yarn-wrapped animals, carefully cutting and painting their cardboard shapes before adding fun details like eyes, ears, and noses. We've also been working on some woollen goodies for Father's Day, but shhh, don't tell him!
Looking ahead, students will be creating Rainbow Hangings. They will decorate their rainbow plates with markers and textas, then thread beads and paper straw pieces onto pipe cleaners to attach to their plates. This project will be a colourful way to practise fine motor skills and create a bright display for the classroom!
Year Two students have been busy exploring a range of creative projects this term. They started with wheel weaving, painting paper plates with bright, contrasting colours and cutting grooves to prepare for weaving. Students learned the under-and-over technique to create circular weavings, adding felt pieces for facial features and tassels to finish their designs.
Looking ahead, students will be creating popsicle weavings, practising over-and-under techniques with colourful wool to create unique patterns. This project will continue to build fine motor skills while allowing each child to experiment with colour, pattern, and texture.
This term, Year Three students have been diving into creative textile and art projects. They began by making softies, designing small hand-sized fabric creations with detailed patterns and practising running stitches. Once stitched, the softies were carefully turned and stuffed, giving students hands-on experience with textile techniques. The finished ones have already go home, but here are some works in progress!
Looking ahead, students will create string art projects. They will start by designing on cardboard circles with pastel markers and layering paint to reveal patterns, then use wool to weave over the designs, creating vibrant and textured artworks. This project continues to develop fine motor skills while encouraging creativity with colour, pattern, and texture.
This term, Year Four students have been working on textile and threading projects. They started by creating Pop Tart cushions, learning to sew felt pieces together using running stitches and decorate their cushions with puffy paint. Students carefully attached their pop tart designs before stuffing their cushions, creating a fun and colourful textile piece.
Next, students will explore cross-stitch animals. They will use templates to guide their stitching, focusing on creating detailed, textured designs while developing their fine motor skills and patience. These projects allow students to combine creativity with practical sewing techniques in a hands-on, engaging way.
This term, Years Five and Six have been exploring weaving and textile projects. Students began by making straw weaving keyrings, learning to weave wool around straws, tie secure knots, and attach their finished pieces to keyrings. They then moved on to creating woven bowls, practicing over-and-under techniques to wrap wool neatly around paper plates. These projects have helped students develop patience, fine motor skills, and creativity through hands-on textile work.
Next, students will focus on creating hessian animals, combining weaving, cutting, and decorative techniques to bring their designs to life.
