Year 5 Update

Special Events
Earlier this term, Year 5 had the privilege of welcoming Carla Fitzgerald, a well-known children’s author whose books are well known amongst some of our students. During her visit, Carla shared valuable insights into her writing process, explaining how she develops ideas and brings her stories to life.
Following this visit, our students participated in our annual Book Fair Parade, arriving dressed as some of their favourite book characters. It was a wonderful celebration of fun and creativity.
Most recently, we held our Father’s Day Chapel, which was a highlight of the term. Behind the scenes, our students worked hard to prepare for a smooth, memorable, and fun-filled event. From our Father’s Day edition of Family Feud to the jar-opening challenge, tie-tying competition, and of course, a hilarious dad joke or two, the morning was a true celebration of our school community and the dads who are such an important part of it.
English
In English, Year 5 students have been exploring how informative texts are written, structured, and presented. The historical novel Tom Appleby: Convict Boy has been a key focus for these lessons, giving students a window into life in 18th-century Australia.
Through their studies, students have been researching what life was like during the early years of European settlement. They have also been developing their writing skills, learning to organise information into clear sections using headings, factual details, paragraphs, and formal vocabulary.
As the term draws to a close, students will compile their research to create an informative historical poster about the convict settlement of Australia. These posters will then be presented to the class, providing an opportunity for students to showcase their knowledge and communication skills.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students have been revising how to compare and order fractions and decimals, as well as working with percentages. They have been developing a deeper understanding of how these three concepts are interconnected and how they can be applied to real-life situations such as shopping, cooking, and measuring.
Students have also been learning how to convert between different units of measurement, including mass, length, volume, and capacity. In addition, they have explored the properties of three-dimensional shapes, such as prisms and pyramids, by drawing and constructing models using various materials.
To conclude the term, students are now learning how to read and create maps using coordinates on the Cartesian plane. This work is helping them to describe locations accurately and understand how maps represent direction, distance, and position.
PDH
PDH has been a highlight for our class this term. We began the term with the exciting opportunity to learn basketball skills from a team of talented and experienced coaches. From clear and practical shooting tips to engaging and challenging team drills, basketball has been both fun and rewarding for our students.
The excitement continued as our focus shifted to gymnastics. Throughout the term, students have been developing a wide range of skills, including partner balances, cartwheels, handstands, and even some introductory flip techniques.
To conclude the term, students will enjoy an excursion to a fully equipped gymnasium, where they will have the chance to put their new skills into practice in a dynamic and supportive environment.
