Grade 5 and 6 Health Day - Nutrition

Last term all grade 5 and 6 students participated in their term 2 Health Day which focused on Nutrition.  Students in grade 5 used the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating guidelines to analyse daily eating habits, designed their own healthy lunchbox, designed and made a healthy sandwich, evaluated the nutritional value of a range of drinks and created a presentation around sugar in drinks.  Student in grade 6 used the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating guidelines to analyse daily eating habits, evaluated our school canteen menu, used food labelling and an app called Food Switch to help assess the nutritional value of foods, and investigated the powers of food advertising.  Here is a little sample from the day:

I learnt that fruits are healthy and have lots of nutrition.  I enjoyed the activity where we looked at the amount of sugar in different drinks.   Ryan 5B

I learnt about the importance of changing my foods to be healthier and that many energy drinks are not good for us.  I liked learning about the food wheel and which foods are good for us.  Lori 5B

We learnt that a can of Pepsi has 10 teaspoons of sugar in it and that we should avoid drinking sugary drinks.  We really liked the activity where we were looking at the levels of sugar in a variety of drinks and representing it in zip lock bags.  Xidiv & Elijah H 5B

I learnt about the five food groups and that many drinks have a lot of sugar in them.  I enjoyed the activity where we put sugar in a zip lock bag and others had to guess what drink we had based on the amount of sugar.  Kennedy 5B

I learnt that we shouldn’t eat a lot of sugar.  I really liked making our salad sandwich for lunch. Zaiden 5C

I learnt that some milks give us lots of energy but we should avoid those that contain a lot of sugar.  5C

State Cross Country

Last week Huon competed in the SSV State Cross Country Championships held at Yarra Glen. It is an exceptional effort to qualify for this event. This means Huon competed against all the best Cross Country runners from across the state in his age group. The course was slippery which added an extra challenge but Huon did an amazing job and we are proud to have an athlete of his ability in our school. Congratulations Huon.
