Around the Secondary Classrooms

House Band
The annual House Band competition occurred on Friday 12 June at lunchtime in the Cahill Centre. All three Houses were well prepared and performed like seasoned musicians. Carle kicked off with an upbeat rendition of Stop Right Now. A tight rhythm section, confident vocals and a killer horn section were features of this performance. Lourdes showed up with their performance of Livin' On A Prayer. Full of hype, it was one big sing-a-long that featured a slashing guitar solo. Loreto finished the concert off by asking Where Is The Love? and they found it in the warm reception they received from the audience, as well as in the spectacular student and teacher vocals throughout. All three Houses featured large swathes of dressed up dancers and hype crew.
It was great to see the support that students from all Houses gave to each other both on stage and in the audience. Loreto was awarded the ‘Golden Microphone’ on the day. The competition was very close and the judges had a tough time separating the three items.
We were treated to a song by our judges, ex-MCC student turned local rising star of the music scene in Hobart, Isabella Mahmoud and her sidekick, the multi-talented Jode Brewster. Many thanks to Isabella and Jode for judging the competition, as well as the House Captains and Heads of House for their organisation and leadership. Congratulations to all of the students and staff involved for their hard work and preparedness to develop the performances over the practice period. You are all rockstars.

Year 9/10 Drama Performance
On the evening of Wednesday 10 June, our Year 9/10 Drama students presented “Rosie”, an original collaborative play that the class had written and rehearsed throughout Terms 1 and 2.
Unlike a traditional scripted production, this project required students to create the story from an initial idea, through to performance. Through brainstorming and discussion, they developed characters, wrote scenes and shaped the narrative together. Every student had the opportunity to contribute ideas and take ownership of the final performance.
The play explored themes relevant to young people today, including friendship, belonging, bullying, peer pressure and the consequences of our choices. Students challenged the audience to reflect on how our actions affect others and the importance of standing up for what is right. The performance was a reminder that drama is not just about entertaining an audience. It can also make us think, feel, learn and reflect on the world around us. The students tackled challenging themes with maturity and sensitivity and should be proud of what they achieved.
One of the highlights of the evening was the series of character monologues that concluded the play. These reflective pieces gave students the opportunity to delve deeper into their characters' thoughts and emotions, while encouraging the audience to continue thinking about the story long after the performance had ended.
Creating an original work is no easy task, and the students are to be commended for their creativity, commitment and willingness to take risks. Congratulations to all involved on a thoughtful and powerful performance.

Year 8 STRIVE Program
Term 2 Reflection
Throughout Term 2, our Year 8 students have continued to engage in the STRIVE program, embracing opportunities to grow across the core themes of Spirituality, Teamwork, Resilience, Independence, Volunteering and Empowerment.
This term, students participated in a rotation of four diverse activities: Orienteering, Self Defence, Yoga and Fishing. Each experience challenged them to step outside their comfort zones, try something new, and give their very best effort. It has been particularly pleasing to see so many students demonstrate resilience, determination and a willingness to persist, even when faced with unfamiliar skills or challenges.
What’s Ahead?
Looking ahead to Term 3, the program takes on an exciting new direction. With guidance from staff, students have chosen a focus area that will shape their learning through a series of ‘unknown’ activities designed to build the skills needed to tackle the significant challenges of Term 4.
This year’s focus areas include:
Strength Under Pressure
Calm and Focus
Understanding and Appreciating Hobart
Small Acts and Big Impacts
We are excited to see how our Year 8 students embrace these opportunities and rise to the occasion as they continue their STRIVE journey.
