Rural Medical Pathway Careers Day
On Wednesday 10 June a small group of Year 11 & 12 students attended the Rural Medical Pathway Careers Day run by Echuca Regional Health. This day was an opportunity for students to explore pathways into medicine and gain hands-on experience in a hospital setting. Students participated in skills sessions, including:
- blood pressure
- using a stethoscope and basic cardiac exam
- surgical tying
ankle exam and bandaging.
Students were also given a tour of all key areas of ERH. The highlight of the day was the Q&A session with the junior doctors and medical students.
We would like to thank Craig Canham, Dr Kate Schultz and the CCLLEN for organising the day which was an amazing opportunity for our students.
Student Reflections of the Rural Medical Pathway Careers Day

'Spending the day at Echuca Regional Health and learning about what a future career in medicine could look like was a valuable experience. The staff running the careers day were welcoming, offering helpful advice and answering all of our questions. Throughout the day, we participated in a range of hands-on activities that provided insight into the medical industry, from measuring blood pressure to assessing and bandaging a sprained ankle. The day concluded with a hospital tour, where we explored different departments and learned how rooms are adapted to meet patients' individual needs. We also had the opportunity to meet students from other schools, discuss shared interests, and gain a better understanding of how to prepare for future careers. My favourite part of the day was learning surgical ties, as it was both engaging and informative. I would highly recommend the ERH Rural Medical Pathway Careers Event to anyone interested in a career in medicine and wanting to learn more about the industry.'

'On Wednesday, I was one of the few students who got the opportunity to visit the hospital for an educational day aimed for aspiring medical students. We had four skill sessions where we learnt how to tie knots for sutures, wrap ankles, take blood pressure and use stethoscopes to listen to the heart and lungs. We had med students teaching us as well as interns at the hospital. These individuals gave us valuable insights into medicine as a career and the different pathways that can be taken to become a doctor. We also had a tour of the hospital where we looked at the old buildings and some of the medical wards. Overall I enjoyed learning what working as a doctor looks like at the Echuca hospital.'

'On Wednesday June 10, myself and five others attended a careers expo at Echuca Regional Health. We were taken through four hands on stations where we learned how to care for a twisted ankle, suture, take blood pressure, and use a stethoscope to track heart rate and breathing. We also had the chance to meet with doctors and medical students, asking questions that deepened our understanding of both the medical field and the study path that leads there. In the afternoon we were given a tour of the hospital, visiting the maternity ward, emergency rooms, first year doctor quarters, and more. The day closed with an inspiring speech from a Rural Practitioner, telling us how important it is to follow our passions, no matter how out of reach they may seem. A huge thank you to Echuca Regional Health for such an incredible and fun opportunity.'
