Year 5/6

We hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful holiday and had the opportunity to spend some quality time with family. We have had a fantastic start to the term and are looking forward to another exciting few months of learning together.

I would also like to extend a very warm welcome to Mrs Jessica Anderson, who has joined our Year 5/6 classroom. Mrs Anderson will be teaching our class on Mondays and Tuesdays while Mrs Wailes is away. We are delighted to have her as part of our classroom community and know she will be a wonderful addition to our team.

English 

This term our focus novel is - Can you see me, written by Libby Scott and Rebecca Westcott. 

Can You See Me? follows the story of Tally, an 11-year-old girl with autism who is navigating the challenging landscape of starting high school. Tally faces numerous obstacles as she tries to fit in, make friends,and communicate her thoughts and feelings to those around her. The novel beautifully explores the world through Tally's unique perspective, shedding light on the daily struggles and triumphs of a young girl with autism. As Tally learns to cope with her differences and embrace her own voice, Can You See Me? delivers a powerful message of understanding, acceptance, and the importance of empathy in our society.

The students have been thoroughly engaged with our class novel and the literacy lessons that accompany it. We have an exciting writing task planned for this term that I know the students are going to love but you'll have to stay tuned, as I can't give away any spoilers just yet!

We have also reintroduced our Monday literacy rotations, taking advantage of having both Mrs Anderson and I in the classroom. These small group activities are designed to strengthen students' reading fluency, sentence structure, grammar and comprehension skills in a fun, engaging and targeted way.
