A Symphony of Stories: Book Week at Birranga College
There was a little extra colour, creativity and bookish joy around Birranga College in August as we celebrated our very first Children’s Book Week!
This year’s theme, Symphony of Stories, was a wonderful fit for our new school community: a celebration of the many different voices, cultures, experiences and stories that make up Australian literature. It was also an extra special year for Book Week, marking 80 years of the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book of the Year Awards.
Throughout the week, students had opportunities to discover new books, learn more about the CBCA Awards and think about what makes a truly great story. The library was at the heart of the celebrations, with lunchtime activities giving students another reason to come together, get creative and share their love of books.
Of course, one of the biggest highlights was our Book Week Dress Up Day! It was fantastic to see students and staff embracing the occasion, with characters from novels, comics, manga, picture books and more appearing around the school. We especially loved seeing the creativity that went into so many homemade costumes. Thank you to our families for helping students get involved and for supporting the day through gold coin donations.
Congratulations to our best costume winners:
- Best DIY Costume = Miky (7E)
- Best group costume = Baani, Vinudi and Dwija (7A)
- Most creative costume = Ms Fiona Fairchild
While costumes are great fun, Book Week is ultimately about helping young people find stories they connect with and making reading a visible, valued part of school life. As Birranga College continues to grow, we hope Book Week will become one of many traditions that help build our school’s reading culture and make the library a welcoming place where every student can find something for them.
A huge thank you to our students, staff and families for making our first Book Week such a joyful one. Here’s to many more!
