STEM Room Donations Needed

We are currently collecting recycled materials for our exciting Term 3 Science Projects in the STEM room. We would greatly appreciate donations of clean items such as plastic water bottles or soft drink bottles, shoe boxes, plastic lids, and cardboard tubing or paper rolls (please no toilet rolls).

Donations can be dropped off at the STEM room at any time. Thank you for your continued support in helping provide valuable hands-on learning opportunities for our students.

Learning in Action

Word Work

Over the last two weeks, students continued to investigate the Latin base st-sist-sin, meaning “stand.” By examining this Latin base alongside common prefixes, students developed a deeper understanding of how word parts combine to shape meaning. Through this exploration, they unpacked the meanings of words such as destination, static, constant, and resist, recognising how each word reflects the underlying concept of “standing” in different contexts.

They also looked at the Latin base -tribe, meaning pay/bestow. We explored words like tribute, contribute and distribute.

Literature

We finished Dirrarn, where we read that Mia enjoyed returning to her family in the Kimberleys during the Easter break. She spent her time in the bush, experiencing the cultural traditions of her family and people. Whilst reluctant to return to boarding in Perth, her grandmother reminded her that she is the leader of her own destiny and that experiencing two different worlds will help her grow and find her place. The power of family and belonging allowed Mia to cleanse away her worries and the tough term she experienced; she was ready to face life in Perth again.

Students also completed their factual recount on Jandamarra, an Aboriginal warrior. Students included factual information, in chronological order, and used time connectives to join their facts.

➗ Maths

Over the last fortnight, we have investigated shapes and what happens to a shape when we translate, reflect, or rotate it. We have described a shape’s new position in relation to where it began. We have also looked at 24 hour time. We discussed strategies we can use to convert from 12 hour to 24 hour time.

Knowledge Rich

After completing Australia in the 1800s, we began a new unit called World Lakes. We have looked at significant lakes from different continents and discovered how they are used for transportation, tourism and a food source. We were able to locate these lakes on maps and discuss their importance for the communities around them.

Some of the lakes we have learnt about so far are:

Africa: Lake Chad and Lake Victoria

South America: Lake Titicaca and Lake Maracaibo

North America: Lake Superior, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron

Wellbeing

Over the last fortnight, we have enjoyed participating in Circles and seeing our Buddies. In Circles, we discussed what respect can look like for an individual, within our school and in the environment.

Research

Maintaining good reading habits is great for students. Books can be borrowed from the school library, otherwise websites like EPIC online are also a great resource.

We encourage students to use what they are learning at school to write at home. There are different ways students can express their writing:

  • Comic strips
  • Stories
  • Presentations
Students can access typing club, to practise their touch typing. At school, our novels and general learning cover some great topics. The students may want to explore these topics further at home. Using the internet is a great resource. They may even like to share their learning with you.
