Homework
A Recap of Term 2 in Grade 4
What a busy and successful term it has been!
📖 Literacy & Knowledge Rich 🧠
In Literacy, students studied the novel Storm Boy, exploring its themes, characters and setting. As part of this unit, they developed their understanding of the Coorong and used their research to write an information report. Throughout the term, students focused on strengthening their writing skills by learning to construct and apply simple, compound and complex sentences effectively.
In our Knowledge Rich Curriculum, students explored the values of service, courage, mateship and loyalty. They investigated the contributions of both everyday heroes and war heroes, developing an appreciation for the qualities that make a positive difference in society. Students were privileged to hear from Nathan Robinson, who shared his experiences serving in the Australian Army and provided valuable insights into the importance of these values.
As part of this unit, students selected an Australian hero to research and wrote a detailed biography. They learnt how to structure their writing using an engaging introduction (GST), well-developed body paragraphs containing topic sentences, supporting details and concluding sentences, and a strong conclusion (TSG). Through this process, students strengthened their research, note-taking and writing skills while celebrating the achievements and contributions of inspiring Australians.
Join us to celebrate the end of this unit at our Notables Afternoon! Students will present their biographies and may choose to dress up as their chosen hero if they would like to.
➗ Maths
In Mathematics, students developed their understanding of decimals by representing, comparing and ordering decimal numbers, as well as making connections between fractions and decimals. During our measurement unit, students explored length and area through a range of hands-on activities, using tools such as trundle wheels, string and rulers to estimate, measure and compare different objects and spaces.
Students also investigated the properties of 2D shapes, identifying, classifying and describing shapes based on their features. They explored lines of symmetry and applied this knowledge to create intricate symmetrical mandalas.
In our data representation unit, students interpreted and analysed a variety of graphs and data displays, drawing conclusions from the information presented. Students also strengthened their addition and subtraction skills by reapplying efficient mental and written strategies from Term 1 to solve increasingly complex problems, including creating and solving equivalent number expressions.
🌿 Wellbeing
In Wellbeing, students learnt about stress management and help-seeking. They explored what stress is, how it can affect people differently, and practised a range of self-calming and coping strategies to help manage challenging emotions. Through games and activities, students developed skills in self-control, self-awareness and emotional regulation. Students also discussed different types of problems and learned how to identify when a problem may require support from a trusted adult. Through class discussions, role-plays and interactive activities, they explored the importance of asking for help, recognising that it is a sign of strength, and identifying trusted people and support networks both within the school and the wider community.
🏅 Sport in Grade 4
Grade 4 sport has continued to be a hit this term! The students participated in a soccer unit where they developed a range of fundamental skills and game strategies. Through various drills, games and team activities, students practised kicking and passing the ball with control, dribbling while moving, and maintaining awareness of their teammates, opponents and the space around them. They also developed their teamwork, communication and sportsmanship skills while participating in modified games. To celebrate their learning and conclude the unit, students will take part in an exciting soccer match against the Grade 3 students.
All of grade 4 want to congratulate Ryder W and Cooper T on their big achievements of running 100km at run club. Many of the Grade 4 students attend run club and are now inspired to reach the same target as their mates.
🧩 Special Activities
This term has also provided students with exciting opportunities beyond the classroom. All classes have visited the kindergarten, where students enjoyed building new friendships, sharing stories, and playing games together. These visits provided a valuable opportunity for students to connect with younger learners and develop their confidence in interacting with others in a supportive environment. We are looking forward to continuing these connections next term, when the kindergarten students will visit LPS. During these visits, students will share stories in the library and explore different occupations together through activities in the Curious Corner, further strengthening community connections and collaborative learning experiences.
