Grade 3 Incursion
The Grade 3 students have been learning about First Nations Peoples as part of their Knowledge Rich unit this term. Throughout the unit, students have explored traditions and cultural practices, including storytelling, dance and ceremonies. They have also been reading Finding Our Heart, a text that introduces young readers to the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
As part of a recent incursion, students learned that the traditional name for a didgeridoo is a Yidaki. They discovered the cultural significance of the Yidaki and learned about traditional protocols surrounding its use. Students also had the opportunity to view a range of traditional hunting tools and important artefacts, gaining a deeper understanding of how these items were used in daily life and continue to hold cultural significance today.
📖 Literacy and Knowledge Rich
This term, students explored the texts Off We Go Around Australia and Finding Our Heart. Through these texts, they investigated how illustrators use images to convey plot, characters and setting, and discussed how imagery helps engage readers and deepen understanding. In Writing, students learnt about the purpose, structure and language features of explanation texts before planning and writing their own explanations about waterfalls. At a sentence level, students practised identifying and using appositives, expanding sentences, and creating complex sentences using conjunctions such as because, but and so. Through Finding Our Heart, students explored the author’s purpose and perspective while learning about the Uluru Statement from the Heart and its connection to our Knowledge Rich unit on First Australians. Students then completed a book response, incorporating the purpose, audience, structure and features of a book report, while developing and justifying their own personal opinions about the text.
➗ Maths
This term in Mathematics, students explored fractions, length, patterns, data representation, and addition and subtraction. They developed their understanding of fractions by identifying, comparing and representing unit fractions and their multiples in different ways. Students measured, estimated and compared lengths using metric units, and investigated number patterns by identifying rules and explaining their thinking. Through data representation, students collected, organised and interpreted information using tables and graphs. Students also strengthened their addition and subtraction skills by using efficient mental and written strategies to solve problems and explain their mathematical reasoning.
🌿Wellbeing
This term in Wellbeing, students developed their understanding of emotions by identifying different feelings, recognising what can trigger them, and exploring how people may react in various situations. They reflected on the range of emotions they experience throughout the school day and discussed strategies for managing these feelings. Students then explored the topics of culture and respect, learning about Adam Goodes, his background, and the messages shared in his book. They also investigated the purpose and significance of an Acknowledgement of Country and discussed ways to show respect in their everyday lives. Through these learning experiences, students developed a deeper appreciation for diversity and the importance of treating others with kindness, understanding and respect.
🏅 Sport in Grade 3
Grade 3 sport has continued to be a hit this term! The students participated in a soccer unit where they developed a range of fundamental skills and game strategies. Through various drills, games and team activities, students practised kicking and passing the ball with control, dribbling while moving, and maintaining awareness of their teammates, opponents and the space around them. They also developed their teamwork, communication and sportsmanship skills while participating in modified games. To celebrate their learning and conclude the unit, students will take part in an exciting soccer match against the Grade 4 students.
