Literacy -
It has been a wonderful term of learning and discovery in Prep! Throughout Term 2, students have been developing their love of reading and building their understanding of how stories work through our Foundation Literature learning.
We have enjoyed exploring a range of engaging texts, including Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!, where we laughed along with the silly adventures of the pigeon, Fang Fang, where we learnt about different cultures and experiences, and The Very Cranky Bear, where we explored characters, settings and important messages within stories.
In our Word Work sessions, we have explicitly taught and scaffolded students to write sentences and words using not only single-letter sounds, but also digraphs and trigraphs, including sh, ai, ay, ng, qu, igh, ph, th, ch and ck.
We have been working hard on our individual reading goals with our teachers and during independent reading time. Students have been practising the skills they are working towards and celebrating their growth as readers. We know that the more we practise, the stronger we become! It has been wonderful to see students becoming more confident and independent readers.
We are very proud of the progress our Prep students have made this term and look forward to continuing to grow their literacy skills throughout the year. Thank you for supporting your child’s learning by sharing stories and encouraging a love of reading at home.
Knowledge Rich-
What an exciting journey we have been on through our Knowledge Rich curriculum this semester! Through our Let's Explore Our World unit, we became global explorers, "flying" around the world to visit each of the seven continents. Along the way, we discovered the unique features, landmarks, animals, environments and cultures that make every continent special. We met people from different parts of the world and compared their daily lives, traditions and experiences with our own. This helped us to develop a greater understanding of the world around us and an appreciation for the many ways people live, learn and celebrate.
In our My History unit, we turned our focus closer to home as we explored our own life stories. We learned about the different stages of life and reflected on the many ways we have grown and changed since we were babies. We shared special memories, discussed important milestones and considered the people who have helped shape who we are today. This unit encouraged us to think about our place in the world and to celebrate the unique journey each of us is on.
Throughout these units, students showed curiosity, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn about both themselves and the wider world. It has been wonderful to see their excitement as they made connections between their own experiences and those of people from different places and times. We finish the semester with a greater understanding of our world, a deeper appreciation of our own histories and many wonderful memories of the learning adventures we have shared together.
Maths - What a fantastic Term 2 it has been in Maths! Our Prep students have achieved so much and should be very proud of their efforts and growth. Throughout the term, students explored part-part-whole relationships, learning that numbers can be broken into smaller parts in different ways and using this understanding to build strong number sense. They developed their counting and place value skills by reading, writing, ordering and comparing numbers, counting collections accurately, and exploring teen numbers as one group of ten and some more. Students also investigated 2D shapes, learning to identify, name, sort and describe circles, triangles, squares and rectangles using mathematical language.
It has been wonderful to see students confidently share their thinking, explain their strategies and apply their learning during hands-on activities and games. We have also celebrated many individual achievements through Maths Masters, with students showing persistence and determination as they worked towards their personal goals. We are incredibly proud of the progress every student has made this term and look forward to further developing their mathematical knowledge in Semester 2.
Teddy Bear day-
If you go down in LPS today, you're sure of a big surprise. If you go into the prep classrooms today, you'd better go in disguise. For every bear that ever there was. Will gather there for certain, because Today's the day the teddy bears have their picnic!
What a fun day! We loved singing, learning and creating with our teddies and even enjoyed a special treat together at the end of the day!
STEM Room Donations Needed
We are currently collecting recycled materials for our exciting Term 3 Science Projects in the STEM room. We would greatly appreciate donations of clean items such as plastic water bottles or soft drink bottles, shoe boxes, plastic lids, and cardboard tubing or paper rolls (please no toilet rolls).
Donations can be dropped off at the STEM room at any time. Thank you for your continued support in helping provide valuable hands-on learning opportunities for our students.
