Science
It has been a fantastic start to Term 3, with students across all year levels diving into new topics and engaging in a range of practical learning experiences.
Our Year 7 students have begun exploring mixtures, investigating how substances can be combined and separated using a variety of physical methods. Year 8 students are learning to distinguish between physical and chemical changes, using observations and evidence to determine when a chemical reaction has occurred. In Year 9, students have commenced their Chemistry unit on chemical reactions, investigating the difference between exothermic and endothermic reactions through a range of engaging practical activities.
With the beginning of a new semester, our Year 10 students have also started their new elective Science subjects. Our Year 10 Physics students have already begun exploring electric circuits, learning how electrical energy is transferred through different circuit components while developing their practical skills in circuit construction and problem-solving.
Our Year 12 Chemistry students recently attended Casey Tech, where they investigated the caffeine content of coffee using industry-standard analytical techniques. Students examined the chemical structure of caffeine, used High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) to generate a calibration curve from caffeine standards, and analysed coffee samples containing unknown concentrations of caffeine. They then compared their findings with the recommended daily caffeine intake, gaining valuable experience using scientific equipment and techniques commonly employed in chemistry laboratories.
Looking ahead, we are excited to celebrate National Science Week in Week 6 (17–21 August). A variety of fun lunchtime activities will be running throughout the week, giving students the opportunity to get involved in Science beyond the classroom. More information will be shared with students closer to the event.
With plenty of exciting practical activities, hands-on investigations and National Science Week just around the corner, there is lots for our students to look forward to this term.
