Zoo Excursion by Lola Rowe

On Thursday 4 June, three Year 9 classes ventured into the city on an excursion to the Melbourne Zoo, for our Geography unit. We all met at the Berwick Train Station at 9:00am to get our names checked off the role and discuss the school expectations to stay safe. We caught the 9:27am train to Parkville and then arrived around 10:30 to board the tram to Melbourne Zoo, braving the rain in between stops. Our classes demonstrated good behaviour and respect to other people on public transport. 

When we arrived at Melbourne Zoo, we were informed about the activities we would take part in, and the animals we would take note of. We were given our booklets and went off in groups. We observed five main biomes and explored certain animal behaviours in their habitats along with learning more about wildlife conservation. The information we collected was then put into our Field Sketch booklets we would then complete at school.

At 12:30 pm we were able to walk around the Zoo with our friends, buy lunch from the Zoo’s shops, and even purchase souvenirs to remember the fun day, ensuring to meet back at the gazebo at 1:10pm to do a head count and mark the role before catching the tram. We all made our way back to the train and arrived in Berwick safely and responsibly, after a big day out exploring and learning outside the classroom.

Overall, it was an enjoyable learning experience, teaching the students how to safely access public transport and of course learning about different biomes and animal adaptations. Thank you to all the teachers for organising this fun day out of the classroom and for supervising us students.
