Junior School

In the Prep classroom we have been learning about length and weight. We used unifix cubes to measure the length of a variety of items around the classroom, then students were asked to order their items from the longest to the shortest. We also used paper clips to measure length as well as our hands and pencils (of the same size).

The term 'hefting' was introduced. This term means to use hold something in your hand and guess what the weight might be. Each student was asked to hold two items, one in each hand and pretend to be scales, balancing and comparing the weight of each object, dropping the heavy one down to the floor and holding the lighter one up to the ceiling. They were then asked to classify and order objects according to whether they were heavy, light or equal in weight. This was lots of fun!

The students are enjoying all the activities we are doing in maths this term, utilising materials and resources to support our learning, it's very exciting and engaging to learn though 'hands on' experiences like this.
