Potato Planting with the Early Years
The Kindergarten and Pre-Primary students were delighted to receive potato seeds graciously donated by the Western Australian Potato Association. Both groups enthusiastically participated in planting their seeds as part of a hands-on learning experience. To enrich the activity, the children were read Potato People by Pamela Allen, a story that beautifully illustrates the journey of potatoes from seed to harvest.
Following the story, the children observed educational materials detailing how potatoes grow and are cultivated on farms. This contextual understanding was complemented by the practical experience of planting the seeds in the school garden, allowing students to connect with nature and witness the growth process firsthand.
In addition to garden planting, the Kindergarten students planted some potato seeds in transparent glass jars. This innovative approach enables them to observe root development and the early stages of growth beneath the soil, fostering curiosity and scientific inquiry.
The students are eagerly anticipating the harvest and look forward to using the potatoes they have grown to prepare delicious recipes, further integrating their learning with real-life applications.
