School Council election

It is time to hold elections for the School Council.

Nominations close Monday 17th February 4:00pm.  Please click HERE to download a nomination form.

Our Council meets at 6:00 p.m. on the third Monday of the month.

Functions of council include:

  • participating in the development, monitoring and endorsement of the School Strategic Plan and Annual Implementation Plan,

  • approving the annual budget and monitoring expenditure,

  • reviewing or updating school policies as required by law or Department policy,

  • raising funds for school-related purposes,

  • maintaining the school’s grounds and buildings, monitoring and reviewing finances,

  • reporting annually to the school community and to the Department,

  • creating interest in the school in the wider community, taking into account the views of the community,

  • regulating and facilitating the afterhours use of school premises and grounds.

Who is on School Council?

For most School Councils, there are three possible categories of membership:

A mandated elected Parent category – more than one third of the total members must be from this category. Department of Education and Training (DET) employees can be Parent members at their child’s school as long as they are not employed at the school.

A mandated elected DET employee category – members of this category may make up no more than one-third of the total membership of school council. The principal of the school is automatically one of these members.

An optional Community member category – members are co-opted by a decision of the council because of their special skills, interests or experiences. DET employees are not eligible to be Community members.

Generally, the term of office for all members is two years. The term of office of half the members expires each year, creating vacancies for the annual school council elections.

School council nominations are now opened. Nomination forms can be collected from the office or emailed.

Nominations close Monday 17th February 4:00pm.

In 2024, the school used its reward dollars to purchase library books, class sets of books and resources for teachers.

In this exciting issue, Scholastic are giving parents and guardians a $5 credit for any spend on Issue #2 items, and are offering up to three free books when you order on Issue #1 (see back page of the catalogue) to help celebrate and spread the love of reading at our school.

Asthma at school

The start of the school year can be busy enough without the added concern about your child’s asthma striking them in the classroom or playground.

But that’s just the time when kids are most at risk of asthma flare-ups, with a spike in asthma attacks and hospitalisation seen during the first few weeks of the school term every year.

When children return to classrooms, factors such as stress, a change of environment or allergens and less strict asthma management over the holidays can trigger asthma. A new set of classmates can also bring a new batch of cold and flu bugs, which are often the culprits behind asthma flare-ups.

What can you do?

Reduce the chances of this happening for your child by following these simple steps.

At home:

  • Have an up-to-date written asthma action plan prepared by your doctor

  • Ensure your child gets back into their asthma routine before the school year starts, including taking preventer medications every day if prescribed

  • Ask your pharmacist to check that your child is using their puffer properly (if they’re old enough to use it by themselves) or visit our How-to Video library on inhaler use

  • Have a check-up before the school year ramps up or sports lessons start to make sure things are going as well as can be

  • Pack a reliever puffer and spacer in your child’s school bag, checking that the puffer isn’t empty or out of date.

At school:

  • Ensure your child feels comfortable asking for help or telling their teacher if they are getting asthma symptoms

  • Give the school and/or childcare a copy of your child’s asthma action plan and tell teachers and staff if your child requires help using their puffer.

  • Make sure your child’s inhaler is in date, and kept in the original box with the prescription label attached and instructions included.  It is also good to label your child’s inhaler and spacer with their name and class.

  • Make sure your child knows where their inhaler is kept and access it easily.

At PPS we have spare emergency reliever inhalers and disposable spacers, these are kept in the First Aid Room.
