From the 5/6 Classrooms

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we embark on an exciting new term, we wanted to provide you with an overview of what your child will be learning in Mathematics and Literacy. We have a dynamic and engaging curriculum planned that aims to both challenge and inspire our students.

Numeracy:

This term, our focus will be on several key areas:

- Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages: Students will deepen their understanding of these concepts, learning how to convert between them and apply their knowledge in real-world contexts.

- Financial Maths: We will explore practical applications of mathematics in everyday life, such as budgeting and calculating percentage discounts.

- 2D and 3D Shapes: Students will study the properties of various shapes, learning to identify and classify them, as well as understand their uses in different contexts.

Literacy:

Our Literacy program will be closely linked with our focus on science this term. Students will be writing explanation texts that incorporate technical language and explain scientific processes. This will not only enhance their writing skills but also deepen their understanding of the scientific concepts we are exploring.

Writing:

- Explanation Texts: Students will learn to write clear and informative texts that explain how things work. They will use technical language appropriately and structure their writing to logically present information.

Reading:

-Book Club Activities: Our Book Club will resume as normal, providing students with opportunities to engage in enriching discussions about plot, character, theme, setting, and other literary elements. These activities aim to enhance comprehension and foster a love for reading.

Science Integration:

Our science lessons this term will focus on hands-on learning, allowing students to engage directly with scientific concepts through experiments and activities. Topics will include the solar system, light refraction, coding, electrical circuits, and states of matter. We are also excited to announce an upcoming incursion where students will have the opportunity to participate in science firsthand, bringing their learning to life in a fun and interactive way.

Hoop Time:

We are thrilled to participate in Hoop Time this term, where our Grade 5 and 6 students will have the chance to develop their basketball skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship. This is always a highlight and a great way for students to stay active and engaged.

Interrelate Program: This term, students will also engage with the Interrelate Program, which focuses on personal development, relationships, and wellbeing. This program is designed to support students in understanding themselves and others, making informed choices, and developing healthy relationships. Through interactive activities and discussions, students will explore topics such as self-esteem, communication skills, and respect for others.

Grade 5 Adventure Camp - The Summit:

For our Grade 5 students, we have an adventure camp at The Summit planned that promises to be an unforgettable experience. This camp will provide opportunities for personal growth, teamwork, and outdoor education, all in a fun and supportive environment.

We are excited about the opportunities this term holds for your child’s learning and development. We encourage you to discuss these topics at home and engage your child in conversations about what they are learning in school. Your support and involvement are invaluable to their educational journey.
