From the 1/2 Classrooms
Discovery - Light and Sound
Welcome back to Term 3!
This term the Integrated Studies topic for Grade 1 and 2 students is Discovery – Light and Sound.
In this unit, students will be learning skills and knowledge through hands on exploration and experimentation with light and sound.
Students will investigate:
· The sources of light and the causes of shadows.
· How we use sound to represent objects and characters in stories.
· How we use design and technology to tell stories.
The essential questions are:
· How can we make puppets and instruments?
· How can we use instruments, objects and our bodies to make sounds?
· How can we use sounds ad shadows to tell a story?
Students will use knowledge about light and sound as they investigate these topics in the classroom. Students will consider how their favourite movies and performances use sound effects to enhance the story, and how music in their world can communicate emotion.
The students began the topic by listening to a variety of sounds and trying to visualize the source of the sound. These sounds included rain on a rooftop, a crackling fire, a dog barking and the wind howling. Students completed a pre-test and were required to write what they knew about where light came from, how shadows are made and listing musical instruments.
The students also watched a clip on how to make a rainbow at home. Another clip demonstrated what happens to light as it is refracted in water droplets to make a rainbow. Feel free to try this at home!
