Year 10 Skills For Life
Recently students in Year 10 Skills For Life engaged in a Sports Taping Workshop, where they learnt key knowledge and practical skills on how to tape a range of joints on the human body as a form of treatment and prevention for common sporting injuries.
Over the past four weeks, students have focused on a sports injury management unit which has had a focus on a range of concepts linked to sporting injuries such as categories, common examples, treatment, prevention and risk management/mitigation. This Sports Taping Workshop was summative practical experience to conclude this unit of work as part of this elective in order to give the students the opportunity to learn and develop key life skills in the area of sports injury management.
The students had a fantastic day and enjoyed the opportunity to learn valuable theory and practical concepts delivered from externally sourced and highly experienced sports trainers from Sports Medicine Australia (SMA) delivered on-site at EHS. Specifically, students engaged in a combination of two accredited courses run by SMA known as an Introduction to Sports Taping course in the first half of the day whereby the students learnt how to accurately and professionally tape the fingers, thumb and ankle. Following this, students then engaged in an Advanced Sports Taping course in the second half of the day which focused on taping more complex areas of the body that are commonly injured in sport such as the shoulder, elbow, knee and achilles tendon.
Following the completion of these two courses on the day, all participating students received two certificates of competency from Sports Medicine Australia for successfully completing the Introduction to Sports Taping course and Advanced Sports Taping course. These certificates and successfully completed courses can now be added to their life experiences and completed accreditations on their resume when seeking employment in the near future. This will be of particular value when/if seeking employment with sporting clubs and organisations

Year 12 Outdoor and Environmental Studies Cross Country Ski Day
On Thursday August 1, our Year 12 Outdoor and Environmental Studies class enjoyed travelling to Lake Mountain Alpine Resort to attend a day trip Cross Country Skiing. This wonderful outdoor activity was undertaken to enhance their learning and understanding of Unit 4, Area of Study 1 – The Importance of Outdoor Environments.
The students were taught the fundamentals of Cross Country Skiing, looked at the importance of this outdoor environment in terms of the importance of healthy outdoor environments for individual physical and emotional wellbeing, and for society now and into the future.
The students all did an amazing job and have said it was one of the highlights of their Outdoor Education experiences here at Eltham High School. Thank you to the staff who attended, Ross McKinnon, David Matters and Peter Torey. We continue to be proud of the Outdoor Education opportunities at Eltham High School.
