Foundation NAIDOC Week Learning
Foundation students completed some wonderful tasks celebrating NAIDOC week. The theme this year was “Keep the Fire Burning”. We have also been learning about First Nations
We discussed the importance of fire. The children came to realise how all of us can use fire to give us light, keep us warm, cook our food (including marshmallows!) and bring us together around a campfire. The children also learnt the importance of fire for First Nation Peoples as a place to gather, yarn, learn from Elders and each other and how fire has been used for thousands of years for ceremonies and to keep Country healthy. They created a fire of all their handprints which they will use as part of their unit of work My Place is Our Place in the coming weeks.
We read the book Our Home Our Heartbeat by Adam Briggs. Using this picture book as inspiration the children designed some wonderful sports tops. They learnt how symbols have been used by First Nations people for thousands of years to communicate information, ideas, stories and histories.
We also read the book Respect by Aunty Fay Muir and Sue Lawson. The importance of respect was discussed and the children drew what they respect.
All grades discussed the symbolism within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags and made versions of them.
