Year 3 NAIDOC Week Rap
Keep the fire burning
NAIDOC week is in July. This year’s theme was “Keep the Fire Burning – Blak, Loud and Proud.” In grade 3DC we watched clips about some of the ways sacred smoke from fire is used by First Nations people.
Then we watched a documentary and read a picture book about First Nations people who are passing down knowledge from the elders about ‘cool burning’ which can protect the land and the animals and help to prevent catastrophic bush fires.
We decided to try to write a rap song. Djali wrote the first part at home by himself and then all of the students in the grade contributed a line or two.
We would like to thank Djali for leading the way. He wrote the first verse and the chorus and he composed the original piano melody.
We would also like to thank the producer Trials who put the beat to Djali’s melody.
Djali is going to the Garma Festival next week in Arnhem Land to celebrate First Nations culture and we hope he can share our rap with them.
