Hands on Learning

With only a few weeks remaining the current Hands-on Learning crew are knuckling down to work. With so much to do and so little time, bet that sounds familiar, there’s no time to lose.
The crew came back from holidays full of beans, this was fitting as we worked on landscaping the vegetable garden. We have the perfect northerly aspect for garden bads, reclaimed timbers for construction and no end of manure (Yep, Ill be making calls to families soon) into which seedlings will grow. Thanks to Rory Fynch who is helping with angle iron to hold the beds together.
The crew spent the day designing the garden layout, finding the right lengths of sleepers to fulfill it and chatting about the holidays. I don’t know what I enjoyed more, working the crew hard or listening to the chain gang stories.
Lunch was grilled saveloys’ with bacon and cheese, the day couldn’t have been any better.
The following week, while we await the angle iron to finish the garden beds, I thought it would be great for the crew to take something home before the end. What better project than a toolbox.
We broke down some pallets, decided on design, trimmed up the timber, marked out the fixings and brought it all together. To my delight, within the day the job was done. Some sanded the finished product, others painted, but all were grinning from ear to ear by the end. There was even a little time to hit the combat course.
Lunch of roast pork rolls with crackle on the side put my previous comment of the day couldn’t get any better to shame
Billy thoughts on the matter were.
“On Wednesday I made a toolbox out of old pallets. We pulled all the pieces off the pallet and then cut them to 40 cm. It was hard going, we had so many tools but only two batteries. We lost the power in the first battery. I cut all the slabs and screwed all the screws. I used the saw and painted mine black. I loved making it. We had pork and crackle for lunch. It was tasty so I loved lunch. I have never had something so good” (Knowing Billy like I do, I bet he says that to all the cooks, he has the best manners)

Today, Aiden, Billy, Lucas and me, Jonty, where going to make a tool box with Aiden making pork rolls for lunch. First, we cut some wood to make the toolbox then we had to drill screw after screw after screw till it was done. We then smoothed out the wood and then we finished. Aiden started cooking and then me, Billy and Lucas started a race on the combat course. I came in second place then we stopped and had some pork rolls. I hope you liked reading this. Next week is our last week of Hands-on Learning.
