3/4 News

Welcome back!

It has been wonderful to have students back and energised for our third term together. We hope you were able to enjoy some family time and dodge any illnesses that seem to be making their way around!

Inquiry

This term, our school wide Inquiry focus is 'Social Justice'. For 3/4's, our unit is called 'In Someone Else's Shoes' and we are taking a closer look at disabilities. From this unit, students will use an understanding of Social Justice to advocate for people in their community that live with a disability. They will appreciate the flexible thinking and courage shown by those with a disability and use them as an inspiration to achieve their own goals. Students will perceive rules and laws as a mechanism for fairness in our community.

Here is an amazing clip of Paralympians from the Rio Games.

We have also started to notice what our school and government do to ensure everyone is treated fairly. Some 3/4 students spotted braille and ramps on our new toilets. Did you know that our Australian notes have braille on them too! They are hard to see in the below photos, but if you have any notes at home, ask your child to show you!

Writing

We have linked our writing focus to Inquiry by creating informative pieces of writing by choosing a Paralympian and a disability to research which includes: Cerebral Palsy, Hearing Impairment, Vision Impairment, Epilepsy, Autism Spectrum Disorder and Muscular Dystrophy.

If you would like to see our competing Paralympians, please visit the below link and ask your child to chat to you about their chosen athlete.

Maths

We have started the term off by discussing the different types of measurement - weight (kg, g and tonnes), distance (length, width and height, mm, cm, m, km), time and capacity (mL & L). Students also looked at the different Olympic events and sorted them into groups based on what type of measurement they use. For example, in sprints they use distance (for the length they will be running) and also time (to see how fast they can complete the race) where for high jump they use height.

Reading

This term we are continuing book study only this time, with three different groups. Mrs Holloway's group will be reading The One and Only Ivan, Mrs Dullard's group will be reading Esio Trot by Roald Dahl and Mrs Cardillo's group will be reading Storm Boy.

We are also focusing on non-fiction texts and unpacking their features, how to summarise the important information and discover the main topic and subtopics.

Huff & Puff

With the Olympics commencing this weekend, we have been getting our heart rates up with different relay events for Huff & Puff. We have seen some great teamwork, encouragement and resilience!

Art

We have loved getting to know Mrs Schiller and have thoroughly enjoyed making our new pieces of art.

General Reminders

Just a reminder that at our school we do not tolerate swearing. If a child is heard swearing they will be asked to phone home and explain the reason for the call.
