Mock Interviews

Workplace Readiness

Preparing for the World of Work

Camps and Pathways Week 2026 gave students a meaningful and practical introduction to one of the most important transitions they will make, entering the workforce. Through a combination of mock interviews, Safe@Work modules, and careers department online activities, students were guided through the knowledge, skills, and professional mindset needed to thrive in a workplace environment.

Mock Interviews — Putting Your Best Self Forward

For many students, the prospect of a job interview can feel daunting. The mock interview program was designed to change that. Students had the opportunity to experience a simulated interview environment, preparing and presenting themselves professionally while practising how to articulate their strengths, experiences, and aspirations with clarity and confidence.

Receiving constructive feedback in a supportive setting allowed students to reflect on their performance, refine their responses, and develop the kind of self-assurance that comes only from practice. These sessions were a valuable reminder that interviewing is a skill and like any skill, it improves with preparation and experience. Whether students are applying for part-time work, an apprenticeship, or a university placement in the years ahead, the foundations laid during these sessions will serve them well.

Safe@Work — Knowing Your Rights and Responsibilities

Alongside the interview preparation, students completed the Safe@Work modules, a comprehensive and widely recognised program that equips young workers with the essential knowledge they need before stepping into any workplace. The modules covered three critical areas:

Your rights, roles and responsibilities

Understanding what you are entitled to as a worker and what is expected of you, is fundamental to a positive and safe workplace experience. Students explored the rights afforded to them under workplace legislation, the responsibilities they carry as employees, and the importance of professionalism, communication, and accountability in a work setting. This knowledge empowers students to enter the workforce with confidence, knowing they understand the rules of the environment they are stepping into.

Identifying, reporting and managing hazards

Every workplace carries risks, and the ability to recognise and respond to hazards is a skill that protects not only the individual but the entire team. Students learned how to identify potential hazards across a range of workplace settings, how to assess the level of risk involved, and the correct procedures for reporting and managing those hazards before they become incidents. This module reinforced the message that workplace safety is everyone's responsibility, not just that of managers or employers.

Reporting incidents and work, health and safety

Despite best efforts, incidents can and do occur in the workplace. This module gave students a clear understanding of what constitutes a workplace incident, the importance of reporting promptly and accurately, and the broader framework of work, health and safety (WHS) legislation that governs workplaces across Victoria and Australia. Students came away understanding that reporting is not about assigning blame, it is about learning, improving, and ensuring the same incident does not happen again.

Careers Department Online Activities

Complementing the Safe@Work modules, students also engaged in a series of careers department online activities designed to deepen their self-awareness and broaden their understanding of the pathways available to them. These activities encouraged students to reflect on their strengths, interests, and values, and to begin connecting those qualities to the wide range of careers and industries they might one day explore. Together with the mock interview experience, these activities helped students build a more complete picture of who they are and where they might be headed.
