Wellbeing Story Time

Picture story books often open up conversations and learning opportunities for what might be complex and hard-to-tackle concepts for children. This is true for conversations about mental health issues, which can at times feel awkward or be challenging to discuss. In this series, I will be introducing you to picture story books which will not only entertain but introduce children to a range of mental health issues which they or someone they know might experience.

In My Heart

Our life is packed full of different feelings! Some feelings are pleasant and make you feel brimming with energy, yet some feelings can be unpleasant and can make you feel on edge or perhaps low in energy. Whatever emotion you are feeling these are all valid and exist in your heart, mine and everyone around us! What’s important is to develop a keen awareness of how you are feeling and respond to our changing emotions with an open mind.

I wonder what feelings you will experience today…?

In My Heart

After listening to the story, you could…

  • Draw a heart on a piece of paper. Colour your heart based on how you are feeling. Use this template if you wish:

  • Choose 2 feelings from the story that you want to reflect on. When did you feel this emotion? What did this emotion feel like in your body? Was it pleasant or unpleasant?
