"If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.” - Albert Einstein
We have loved having our Year 7s and Year 8s in the Fiction Library for their Wide Reading sessions. Every student in Year 7 and 8 will be asked to read an additional novel outside of the English curriculum this semester.
We have been celebrating International Women’s Day with displays for our students to see some of the phenomenal women in our community and some of their achievements. Women who are disruptors to the status quo, often described as ‘difficult’ women of their time. Women who are the change they want to see in society.

We have had book displays, slides projected onto the screens, mindful colouring and signs around the fiction library encouraging our students to believe in themselves and their capabilities. We hope in some part our work in the MRC helps students increase their self-esteem and opens the students up to a wide variety of role models.

Our New Books display is constantly being updated, please encourage your daughter to take a look at the New Books and see if something sparks their interest.

If there is a novel that your daughter would like to read and we do not have it, there are book request slips at the MRC main desk. Please fill in the request slip and we will purchase a copy of the text for our collection.
Happy Reading.

The DAV Debating season for Academy of Mary Immaculate commenced on 26 February, with teams once again participating in the Melbourne City Competition.
Encouragingly, Academy has managed to field two teams at both the Year 9 C-Grade and Year 10 D-Grade level.
The new season brought with it great enthusiasm and a wonderful spread of results, with three of the five teams recording wins.
The Year 12 A-Grade Team represented by Kayla Hanley, Kate Chesterton and Freddy Goddard debated successfully for the affirmative, on the topic of the "Cosmetics and fashion industries do more harm than good", defeating University High in a close debate – plaudits on a well-deserved win!
The two Year 10 C-Grade teams experienced close defeats to Haileybury City, on the topic of "Airlines overbooking flights", arguing on the affirmative side – both teams should still take great pride in their debates, debating on a very tricky topic.
Our two debutant Year 9 D-Grade teams recorded Herculean wins, overpowering University High to win with great conviction – it was a spectacular introduction to debating for the D-Grade team and the future looks very bright!
Huge shout out to our first ever debaters: Freya McGlone, Emma Hutchison, Lucy Crichton, Georgia Xenoyiannakis, Alessia Caruso and Brigid Govan. The girls are no doubt preparing for their next fixture in the final weeks of Term 1, as they look to build on this momentum.

Last Friday, our school community marked Clean Up Australia Day in a way that was both confronting and inspiring. Rather than heading off-site to clean, we turned our focus inward and examined the waste we generate in a single day. By the end of Friday, we had carefully collected and weighed all the rubbish produced across the school... a staggering 63 kilograms.

To spark curiosity (and a little competitive spirit!), we launched our “Guess the Garbage” competition. With over 150 entries from students and staff, the buzz was real. Guesses ranged wildly, prompting thoughtful conversations about consumption, packaging and our daily habits.
What struck us most was not just the final number, but the awareness it created. Seeing 63 kilograms in one place makes waste visible and therefore changeable. Clean Up Australia Day reminded us that responsibility begins with noticing. Now the challenge is clear: how can we reduce that number next time?
