On 15th November, Year 3 ventured to Wollongong to visit the UOW Science Space Centre. Every moment of the journey was electric and all were buzzing with excitement!
We started our adventure with a STEM Lego challenge to see who could build the strongest bridge in just ten minutes. Then we had a chance to explore the top floor looking at dinosaur robotics, flight simulators, how we can use physics to benefit us and enjoying science with our friends.
We moved into the dome theatre and got to race through space seeing exactly where our planet is not just in the galaxy but in the entire universe. We felt so small! We were amazed at how many stars are truly out there and how beautiful each of them are. After, we enjoyed the exhibits on the ground floor where some of us simply hung around! Finally, we listened to a show about sound energy and how different materials can either muffle or magnify sounds.
Overall, everyone had a great day filled with great memories with friends and experiencing science in action. Mrs Morris, Mrs Crabtree and Mrs Giddings were proud of all of Year 3 for modelling our school values for the entire excursion.
Last week, our senior biology students got creative (and deliciously messy!) during a hands-on activity designed to deepen their understanding of the cell membrane’s structure. Using buttercake, frosting, and an assortment of lollies—generously baked by our very own Mrs. Graham (thank you for the tasty treats!)—the class brought the fluid mosaic model to life.
The activity turned the complex concept of the cell membrane into a tangible, edible masterpiece. The marshmallows and liquorice on the cake represented the phospholipid bilayer. Various lollies symbolised proteins, cholesterol, and carbohydrates, showing how these components move within the "fluid" environment of the membrane.
Students enthusiastically assembled their models while discussing the dynamic nature of membranes and their critical role in cellular function. It was a fun, interactive way to reinforce textbook learning—and judging by the crumbs left behind, it’s safe to say the lesson was a hit in more ways than one!
Well done to our budding biologists for their creativity and to Mrs. Graham for making science so sweet!
On Friday 14 November, our school took 2 teams of dedicated and high achieving History students up to Sydney to compete in the Stage 5 History Mastermind competition.
This is a fun and rewarding day out for enthusiastic students and it helps to extend their learning as well. Students competed against a large number of teams in rounds of trivia style questions on topics including Making of the Modern World, Movement of Peoples, Making a Nation, World Wars I and II, Australia between the Wars, Popular Culture, Australia and theVietnam War, Rights and Freedoms, as well as other general History trivia.
Our students acquitted themselves extremely well and made the school, their parents and themselves proud.
Thank you very much to Mr DeRooy for driving everyone up and back, and to students Myles C, Lachlan W, Lottie T, Alisha C, Nick S, Eadee W, Millie S, Jai D, and Jia K for representing the school so well.
Students were presented with certificates from the History Teachers Association and the school was presented with a book on the Silk Road.
On Friday 29 November, 41 students, accompanied by Miss Bignell, Mr Clarke, Mr Terlich and Mr Curran, headed to Reed Park, Horsley, for an exciting day of touch football. Despite a bit of rain, the atmosphere was buzzing as students played some intense games of touch footy. The weather didn’t dampen the enthusiasm and everyone had a fantastic day. A special thanks goes to Riley W, whose refereeing skills were invaluable in ensuring the games ran smoothly.
The event also brought great news for several of our students. Chelsea M, Khloe H, Maddy H, Layla M, Yongjae K, Jude McP, Jai M, Kent E and Jono McL were selected to represent NCS and the CSSA South Coast Zone at the CSSA State Touch Football Gala Day in 2025 - a well-deserved recognition of their talent and hard work. Jarrod M was also selected as a shadow player, a notable achievement.
The day concluded with impressive results for our school: both the Junior and Opens Boys teams secured second place in their respective divisions. These accomplishments capped off a fantastic final Gala Day for the year and highlighted the strong sportsmanship and dedication of our students. We’re excited to see what 2025 will bring as we continue to embrace new sporting opportunities. Congratulations to all of our students and a big thank you to the staff and organisers who made the day such a success!
Over the first 2 weeks in November, year 8 rocked their French learning through the program: ROXXEM. The competition involved learning 8 recent French songs by different artists from around the world. For each song there were 2 game modes and the more often students played the games the higher their score. They could also vote in each round for their favourite song. As it was an international competition there were 14,000 students from 700+ classes who joined the Roxxem tournament with over 40,000 votes cast.
Our top scorers were:
8G
Koby H 405,526
Maddy H 219,550
Benjamin G 190,594
Elspeth M 125,841
Elsie P 100,747
The class rank internationally was 186.
8R
Simeon T 166,310
Chelsea M 149,530
John P 117,333
Joshua C 99,042
Class rank 351.
Well done year 8 for such a successful competition!
