It has been an incredible year for Mathematics at St Michael's, with students showing remarkable progress and dedication across all topics. Every class has worked tirelessly, and we are proud to share their hard-earned achievements.
This year, our approach to teaching mathematics has been centred around the Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) framework and the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) model. These teaching strategies have enabled students to build a deep understanding of mathematical concepts by moving from hands-on, concrete learning experiences to more abstract, problem-solving skills. By using these methods, we have seen students develop a strong grasp of mathematical ideas, increasing their confidence and competence.
Our Year 5/6 students had the opportunity to showcase their mathematical abilities in the Newcastle Permanent Mathematics Competition, where they delivered exceptional results. We were thrilled to celebrate:
1 Distinction award
9 Merit awards
13 Participation awards
In addition, a select group of 11 high-achieving students, chosen based on their performance in NAPLAN and PAT-Math assessments, took part in the Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiad. This competition, which spanned Terms 2 and 3, featured four challenging tests that gave our students the opportunity to extend their problem-solving skills and apply their knowledge in new and exciting ways.
At the backend of the year, we couldn’t be prouder of our budding mathematicians. Their dedication, hard work, and curiosity have made this a truly fantastic year of learning. We look forward to even more growth and success in the coming year!
