From the Archives

In 2000, the College Captains, Katrina Stone and Warren Gardiner travelled to Rome for World Youth Day as part of the group from the Diocese of Sale. They were accompanied by Sr. Rose Duffy, Fr. Brendan Hogan (brother of former Principal, Tim Hogan) and Mr. David Hansen (then a teacher at Catholic regional College, Traralgon). That year there were two million pilgrims from one hundred and fifty-seven countries in Rome for the World Youth Day events.

As well as World Youth Day, 2000 was a Jubilee Year.

The Jubilee is a rich tradition in the Catholic Church, tracing back to the year 1300 when Pope Boniface VIII initiated it. Originally, the Jubilee was intended to occur every one hundred years, an extraordinary event where pilgrims could seek plenary indulgence.

However, as enthusiasm grew, the Church began to celebrate it every 25 years to allow each generation the chance to participate. This special year is meant to be a time of spiritual renewal, forgiveness, and celebration, and it is open to everyone, whether you are Catholic, curious, or just passing through.

Rome was not the only place the Pilgrims visited.

Katrina wrote in The Rock, “Assisi, however, was by far the most beautiful place I have ever been to.” Warren was struck by the beauty of Rome. He wrote, “The artwork in Rome is Spectacular.”

2025 is a Jubilee Year. The Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica will be open on Christmas Eve, 2024. The Doors will close on December 28th, 2025.

2000 is another example of the opportunities afforded to the students at St. Peter’s College to enrich and grow their faith.

VCE VM Christmas Morning Tea & Activities with the Residents of AVEO Edrington Park

The spirit of Christmas filled the air at the Edrington Park Retirement Village as our Y11 Vocational Major  students planned and ran a Christmas Morning Tea and Activities for the residents.

Our students took great care in planning and creating a menu including festive treats such as gingerbread, shortbread, sausage rolls, muffins, and a refreshing Christmas fruit salad. In addition to the food, students also planned a variety of craft and fun activities for the residents. The activities included: Decorating & Icing Gingerbread, Christmas Photo Booth, Creating Christmas Cards, Making Christmas Decorations, Decorating Wheelchairs and Walkers and Making Mini Christmas Trees.

The event marked the students final community activity for the year and we would like to extend our thanks to all the students, staff, and residents of AVEO who took part in making this Christmas Morning Tea such a great success. We look forward to continuing to build these important connections as the program continues into 2025.
