Year 1: Mathematics - Patterns

Year 1 Math - Patterns

This term, the Year 1 students explored the fascinating world of patterns as part of their Maths lessons. Through hands-on activities and engaging discussions, they discovered how patterns are all around us and learned to recognize and create them with confidence.

The students began their investigation by identifying patterns in everyday objects, such as stripes on clothing, tiles in mosaics, and even the rhythm of clapping games. They were excited to discover that patterns repeat, and they practised naming the repeating elements. Whether it was colours, shapes, or numbers, the students learned to identify what made a pattern unique.

From there, they progressed to creating their own patterns. Using materials like counters, blocks, and playdough, the Year 1 students enthusiastically experimented with different combinations to build sequences. They took their learning to the next level by coming up with a "rule" to describe their patterns, such as “red, blue, blue” or “triangle, square, triangle.” They loved sharing their rules with their classmates and the creative patterns they came up with.

To extend their understanding, the students also explored more complex patterns, including increasing patterns where something new is added with each step. These activities challenged their thinking and allowed them to explain their observations in their own words.
