PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

The Moorabbin Primary School Community touch the land and think of the Bunurong People and surrounding Clans of the Kulin Nation who cared for the land before us.

We share our gratitude to their Elders past, present and emerging.  As we touch this land, we promise to treasure it, taking care of all its people, animals, plants and waterways. We at Moorabbin Primary School appreciate this land. Thank you.

Dear Families, carers, and friends of Moorabbin PS,

EXITING STUDENTS, STAFFING AND CLASSES FOR 2025

If you have a child in Foundation through to Grade 5 who is planning to leave Moorabbin Primary School at the end of 2024 could you kindly email the office at: moorabbin.ps@education.vic.gov.au

All staff are now engaged in forming classes and groupings for 2025. Many thanks to parents and carers who have sent through important information about their children which is assisting our staff in ensuring placements, abilities along with academic and emotional concerns are considered.

We know that there are still some undecided families, and we also know that children are informing their friends and teachers that they may be moving. This is really important information for our planning, and it potentially means that a staff members job may be affected. Please let us know sooner rather than later. We appreciate that it may be uncomfortable to inform us, but it is crucial for Moorabbin’s workforce planning.

Our class structure for 2025 may look like this model:

  • Foundation -4 classes @20 students in each
  • Year 1- 4 classes @21 students in each
  • Year 2- 4 classes @24 students in each
  • Year 3- 4 classes @20 students in each
  • Year 4- 3 classes @20 students in each
  • Year 5- 4 classes @21 students in each
  • Year 6- 2 classes @27 students in each

YEAR 6 FOR 2025 TO BE “STRAIGHT CLASS”- IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT HOW THE YEAR 5-6 COHORT WILL WORK.

Many thanks to all the parents that have taken time to email me over the last three weeks with concerns and reasoning behind why the school should look at straight classes in all year levels and justifications as to why for our Year 6 cohort for 2025.

To that end we have considered our parent feedback and the overwhelming pressure that has been put on to create straight classes for 2025. This decision has not been taken lightly and it will affect some of the other programs that the school runs in order to accommodate another teacher and not put the school into a deficit financial position.

I will have to make some very hard decisions around which programs we will have to modify or even discontinue that support so many of our students and their families. When we complete our staffing for 2025, I will be able to inform our community about any changes.

So, for 2025 there will be 2 Year 6 classes. There are some important factors that families need to be aware of.

  • Each Year 6 class will have @ 27 students and if the school has in zone applications, they will have to accept the future enrolments' which could increase the class sizes
  • All the emails and requests that were sent to me in regard to friendship groups, separating students for emotional/ behavioural reasons prior to this communication today cannot be considered anymore with only 2 classes for teachers to consider the original requests
  • There will be job shared classrooms, as teachers, similar to the corporate world, have a right to flexible work arrangements and as an employer I cannot and won’t discriminate.  Across the school there will be 4 or 5 shared classes. This is unavoidable and will form part of the working landscape in all industries including education. Please don’t request a specific teacher.
  • In order for interschool sports to run and the ratio for this to be safely attended and to match the Kingston district, only year 6 students will be participating in interschool sports in 2025. This means that our school will be aligned with the Kingston sports district like all other competing schools.
  • Our Year 5 students in 2025 will still have sports that will be held at the same time as their Year 6 peers on a Friday morning, but it will be onsite
  • Camps/ excursions/ incursions/Beach program and other relevant extra curricular activities for our Year 5-6 students will continue to be attended by both cohorts ONLY IN 2025

DRIVING AND PARKING AROUND OUR SCHOOL

Parents are reminded to drive with extreme care and caution around the school. Over the last three weeks, several parents have contacted the office and emailed me with concerns about dangerous and illegal driving practices around the pickup and drop off times and potentially compromising the safety of children.

I have also had concerns raised about some parents who are unfortunately doing the wrong thing but are being accosted verbally by others. Please use the pedestrian crossing and gates safely, please don’t park in front of our neighbours’ driveways, in disabled parking spots, or parking with hazard lights holding up traffic!

The laneway between the school and Lepage street, is also a very busy thoroughfare for students and parents at the beginning and end of each school day. The laneway is not designed to carry the volume of school traffic that it does, therefore, extra care and patience is required for any drivers using this area.

It is of vital importance that our students feel safe and secure when attending school.
