Around the Secondary Classes

Year 7 Science

Now that our Year 7 students have earned their Bunsen burner licences, they are putting their skills into practice by investigating the rate at which water boils comparing the blue flame and the orange safety flame. The results were unanimous, the blue flame wins in both time and cleanliness!

STRIVE

Our Year 8 students have commenced their involvement in the STRIVE program with enthusiasm over the first month of School with two sessions at Kingston Beach where students alternated between water activities and a bushwalk along the Alum Cliff Track.

The aim? To push them to try new things, build resilience, and showcase what they can do when they put their mind to it.

Seeing students eagerly embrace these activities has been fantastic. It is clear that they're not just learning about the outdoors and what Tasmania has to offer but also discovering a lot about their own strengths and capabilities. With more unique experiences planned for the term and beyond, the STRIVE teaching team are all excited to see how the students grow through the STRIVE program and embrace all the challenges involved.

English Extended

Our Years 9/10 English Extended elective students were privileged to attend a workshop with author Lian Tanner in the College Library recently. The students were completely engrossed and actively engaged in all the writing activities organized for this event.

Lian Tanner holds a special place in our College Library, as her numerous children's books have become favourites among our students.

The accomplished Australian author inspired young minds and shared valuable insights on initiating a writing project with creativity and boldness. The impact of her visit resonated with the aspiring authors we have among our student body, and they left the workshop with newfound motivation to delve into their creative endeavours.

For those seeking guidance, Lian Tanner offers advice for young authors on her website: https://liantanner.com.au/advice-for-young-authors/

We are grateful for Lian Tanner's enriching experience and invaluable lessons, which set the tone for a year filled with literary inspiration and creativity.

First Nations Excursion

13 of our Years 7 to 10 students headed to Bruny Island last week for a full day cultural experience led by Uncle Rodney Dillon and alumni Bronwyn Dillon (Class of 1997) and predominantly held on Murrayfield Station. The students visited truganini - the Neck game reserve lookout, along with Quarries Bay, where evidence of life 25,000 years ago can be seen. The day was ended with learning some traditional weaving skills from Bronwyn.
