Year 11-12 Design Production and Engineering Design

My fabulous Year 11 and 12 students have been learning how to apply the design cycle and engineering thinking to a range of interesting projects. From crowbars, chopping boards, body armour, hacksaw and an ingenious tomato transporting machine, we have all been learning a lot about design and material manipulation to achieve success.

Years 9-10 Design Production

Students have been learning new skills working with leather and steel to make some very attractive belts and functional rocket stoves. They have stepped outside of comfort zones and applied a teamwork approach as they tackle these projects. The recent purchase of a new bench top bandsaw for cutting steel sections will be welcomed by students.

Year 7 and 8 Design Production

Year 8 students have been working hard creating designs and working drawings in Fusion 360 for a large wooden dice like the one pictured. Many dice are nearing the end of production. Students have developed skills in measuring and marking out, as well as an appreciation for the sustainable practices in the timber industry, as wood is great at storing the carbon and gases produced in its harvesting and manufacturing processes.

Year 7 students are working on wooden utensils and have studied the technological processes involved for making a design starting from planting a tree all the way to a finished utensil you will find on a store shelf. They have conducted tests to determine the minimal handle thickness and have developed pleasing symmetrical and a-symmetrical designs on grid paper. Most students are well into carving out the scoop part of their utensil and some are now cutting out their shapes with coping saws.

Food and Textiles

Foods and Textiles Year 9/10 students have been learning about nutrition in early childhood and Years 7 and 8 students have been learning about nutrition in the Primary years. We have also been developing our sewing skills. Students from various classes at varying skill levels, have been learning to sew cushions which they will give away to a Primary class. We have also prepared some nutritious and fun party food, learning about food allergies and how to cater for these in a children’s party context.  We’ve had a lot of fun developing new knowledge and skills.
