National Reconciliation Week (NRW)

Monday 27 May - Sunday 3 June

National Reconciliation Week invites all Australians to delve into our collective pasts, cultures, and achievement, fostering understanding and unity. It's an opportunity for our community to reflect on our role in advancing reconciliation across Australia.

Here at The Friends’ School, we are marking this occasion with special events occurring in all sections of the school. NRW also marks the launch of The Friends’ School Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). We are extremely proud as a School to embark on this journey towards reconciliation as an organisation.

Primary School

Students in Kinder, Prep, and Year 1 will be learning concepts connected to reconciliation conversation in their literacy lessons. Teachers of these students have chosen some wonderful picture storybooks that explore concepts of togetherness, inclusion, reconciliation and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives.

Students in the Primary School will be exploring the concept of ‘reconciliation’ and what the word means so that they can engage in meaningful conversations. Students will have the opportunity during class time to develop their understanding of the concept of reconciliation.

Middle School and Senior School

Both the Middle School and Senior School will be marking NRW with assemblies. The focus of these occasions will be on imagining a better future for Australia as our nation moves towards reconciling events from the past. The Senior School will welcome Tim McCormack to take part in a Q&A session on the topic of reconciliation and truth-telling in the context of Tasmania's colonial history. Tim is a UTAS Law School Professor and he was appointed by former Premier Peter Gutwein in 2011 to assist former Governor Professor Kate Warner in consulting Tasmania’s Aboriginal People and recommending a pathway to Truth-Telling and Treaty. He emphasises the significance of this issue for Tasmania’s future.

We look forward to coming together as a learning community to reflect on what reconciliation means to us.

Middle School House Pantomime

Friday 31 May | 6pm

The Middle School House Pantomime will be the night of nights for House spirit and frivolity! Traditionally based on a fairytale, a Pantomime is a comedic show, featuring song, dance, audience participation and slapstick humour. Written with a Friends’ School twist, the Middle School House Pantomime promises to be a school event not to be missed! Set to lift the roof of The Farrall Centre on Friday 31 May, we ask that audiences are seated at 5.45pm for a 6pm start. Who will our guest judges crown as the winners of the 2024 Middle School House Panto? Be there to find out!

Performances are as follows:

Hodgkin: Cinderella

Ransome: Snow White and the Seven Dwarves

Unwin: Jack and the Beanstalk

Mather: Hansel and Gretel

We cannot wait to show the School community all of the students’ hard work! Tickets for the 6pm performance are available through Try Booking. Proceeds from this event will be proudly donated to The Humour Foundation who promote wellbeing, lift spirits and improve health through joyful humour, insightful connection, and creative play in hospitals around Australia.

Coats for Kids - Donations

Thursday 9 -  Friday 31 May | Middle School Library

The Middle School Student Voice Council has just launched an initiative to help keep Tasmanian children in need, warm this winter by donating coats to the Tassie Mum's 'Coats for Kids' campaign. It's time to clean out the wardrobe!

Coats must be cleaned, free of any holes, stains or broken zips and the size must be clearly labeled.

Donations of childrens' coats can be placed in the House tubs in the Middle School library until Friday 31 May. Which House will collect the most coats for Tassie kids in need?!

With over 1200 books donated to Library Aid International in Term 1 (and Unwin taking out top honours for the most donations), the Student Voice Council looks forward to seeing how many coats we can collect to help Tassie Mums' aim to collect 1000 coats in May!

Any questions, contact Essie Hoggart, House and Student Leadership Coordinator.

Music Ensembles

If your child is interested in joining one of our many ensembles, please encourage them to talk to a member of the music staff; they will be able to suggest an ensemble appropriate to their instrument and experience. The ensemble rehearsal schedule is available here.
