Homework Policy Update

Last week we shared a message with our school community regarding an update to our Homework Policy.

To confirm, homework that is encouraged will be nightly reading (all year levels), Mathletics tasks (Years 3 to 6) and then there will be a range of optional tasks which can be selected from the Homework Rubric. There are three homework rubrics; one for Prep - Year 2, one for Year 3 and Year 4, and one for Year 5 and Year 6. The tasks for students to select from on these rubrics will be updated termly. These rubrics have already been shared with your child. The activities on these rubrics have been thoughtfully designed to offer students opportunities for extension and reinforcement of classroom learning in a way that is engaging and flexible. It is important to note that while these rubric tasks are available for students to explore and complete, they are optional and will not be assessed by the classroom teacher. It is also important to note that the expectations regarding length of time spent reading increases as students move from Prep through to Year 6.

Following feedback from students, teachers and parents and carers, we have implemented this consistent approach to homework that recognises that every family's evening looks different and their child's needs after a day of learning are different. Reading (all year levels) and reinforcing maths concepts through Mathletics tasks (Years 3-6) are the priority, and the rubric tasks are available for optional additional tasks.

To support the increased consistent focus on regular reading practice at home, we would like to recognise and support students towards achieving 100 nights of reading. To celebrate students achieving this milestone, we will hold a pizza party for them to enjoy with their fellow peers who have also achieved this wonderful milestone.

We hope this consistent approach to homework supports our students and families and ensures time spent on learning at home is manageable, meaningful and achievable. Thank you for everything you do to support your child with their homework.

Premiers' Reading Challenge

BPS is participating in the Premiers’ Reading Challenge 2024!

We strongly encourage students to get involved as the challenge is a fantastic way to develop motivation and enjoyment of reading. The challenge is open now until 6th September.

Students will bring home their login details this week. Please help your child to log in using the following steps:

  1. Go to the Challenge application.
  2. Select the School/Student button.
  3. Select the VPRC login option.
  4. Enter your username and password.
  5. Select Login.

Once logged in, the dashboard contains everything you need to complete the challenge including the challenge book list, your child’s target and a tally of books read. Once submitted, books will be verified by school staff.

Please see this link for  the PRC Rules

Prep to Year 2 students are challenged to read 30 books and can read independently or with someone. Year 3 to Year 6 students are challenged to read 15 books. Students can read a combination of challenge books and free choice texts.

We would love to see lots of students involved and will be celebrating their progress throughout the challenge.

Happy reading!
