Welcome back to Term 2! It has been amazing to hear about all the celebrations and exciting adventures the students have had over the holidays.

LITERACY

This week, we have reviewed the Stage 1 sounds (Ss, Aa, Tt, Pp, Ii, Mm, Cc, Ff) and introduced the first two sounds of Stage 2 (Bb and Hh). This combination of letters allows our students to start building their knowledge around several CV (consonant-vowel), VC (vowel-consonant) and CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words. At home, you can work with your child to learn the letters and their most common sound, as well as building and reading CV, VC words and CVC words. We have also learned some heart words (words that are not decodable and can be only learned by heart). At home, you can practise reading some of these words by finding them in the picture books that are sent home for homework. These words include: The, the, I, My, my.

NUMERACY

This week, we have started developing our knowledge of time. We are learning to identify events that occur during the day and at night and we have learnt new vocabulary including morning, noon/midday, afternoon and evening. We have also been learning to sequence the days of the week in order and discussing which days are weekdays and which are the weekend.

Later this term, we will continue to develop our knowledge of numbers to 10 and begin exploring addition.

SEL/INQUIRY

This term our inquiry program is about families. Please send on Class Dojo, or bring to school, a photo of your child and their family.

Things to remember:

  • Homework will begin again in week 2. Homework goes home on Mondays and comes back to school on Fridays.
  • Families are welcome to come to our cohort and school assemblies on Fridays at 2:30. Cohort assemblies are held in the large Grade 1/2 space (through the blue door), and the school assemblies will be held outside under the COLA (unless otherwise advised).
  • Please ensure your child has fruit, a snack and lunch as well as a water bottle.
  • Lunch orders - Please ensure all lunch orders are placed in the lunch order basket at the beginning of the day. Occasionally, students have forgotten to place lunch orders in the basket and have had an emergency lunch provided.
  • Keep up the positive after-school routines (homework, dinner conversations, bedtime).

Things you can work on at home:

  • Letter and sound recognition (recognising upper and lowercase letters and their most common sound) with a particular focus on the letters Mm Ss Ff Aa Tt Pp Cc Ii Bb Hh
  • Reading a shared book every night focusing on concepts of print (identifying the front cover, a word, a letter, 1:1 finger pointing, talking about the story and using specific vocabulary)
  • Fine motor activities – using playdoh, cutting, threading – to strengthen hand muscles
  • Having nightly dinner conversations with the family (talk about the day)
  • Have your child help out in the kitchen by measuring ingredients when you are making meals, and counting items that are going in the basket at the shops. This will assist in developing counting skills
  • Look at some of the information provided under the Literacy, Numeracy and SEL/Inquiry headings and work on these tasks to reinforce learning.
