Year 6
Our Grade 6 team is very proud of our students and the progress they’ve made this month! Their confidence is growing more each day, and we’re excited to share what they've learned!
READING
Strong readers think about how texts are connected to each other. This can help us learn more about a topic or even the ways authors share their ideas. One way we can look for connections across multiple texts is to compare and contrast two (or more) texts. We have been using what we learned about text structure to evaluate multiple texts and to analyze side-by-side text structure in a variety of genres.
WRITING
Teaching students to write paragraphs using the TEEEEEL method—Topic, Explain, Elaborate, Example, Evidence, Evaluate, and Link—is an effective strategy to enhance their writing skills. They have worked on using this structured approach, which provides a clear framework for them to organize their thoughts and present their ideas coherently. This has helped students become more confident writers, and it is preparing them for more complex writing tasks in the future!
MATH
In addition to continuing our practice of multiplication fact fluency, students are learning the concepts and calculations involved in determining the area of geometric shapes, adding fractions, and using problem-solving methods. They've practiced measuring the area of rectangles and triangles, using geometric formulas, and adding fractions with like and unlike denominators.
In addition, they are using Polya’s 4 steps for problem solving and the RUCSAC method to solve single-step and multi-step/multi-operational word problems.
SEL
Positive coping strategies & managing conflicts
Students are learning the importance of managing stress and fostering aspects of self-care and conflict management that help us as we mature. They have discovered some practical skills they can use to manage conflict in a healthy way, and created a personal coping profile to support them as they navigate life's relationship challenges.
INQUIRY
Students are working in groups to design their own race around the world! Each group has chosen two countries in Europe, three countries in Asia and one country in Central America to include in their race. They are using mapping and navigation skills to plan their journey and working out the details needed to complete activities and visit certain natural and man-made features during their race.
