Japanese

Minasan Konnichiwa! (Hello everyone.)

Welcome to Week 8 Japanese.

Year 5/6

Students have been learning about a traditional story, “Issun Bōshi”. After watching a video of the story, students have been re-writing the ending, creating their own version. When the work is completed, they are planning to give them to junior students.

Year 3/4

Students had a session to talk to Japanese students using Zoom in Week 6. They introduced themselves in Japanese and had some conversations asking and answering about their favourite things in English. It was the first time for Year 3 to have a meeting with small groups. I heard someone saying “Oh it’s scary!” beforehand, but everyone participated enthusiastically, with some students just listening this time. We are all making bookmarks with a Japanese student’s name on it, their favourite things or some Aussie drawings.

Year 1/2

Students have practiced how to count small animals, body parts, 7 days of the week, reading Hiragana and likes/dislikes. Also they learnt about the “Tengu-goblin” which appears in some Japanese folk stories. After the writing work, we sang a new song “Tengu san”. They also learnt some fruits and vegetable words such as tomato and onion.

Foundation

Students practiced greetings, animals, likes and counting. They have learnt some body parts and have been singing “Head Shoulders Knees and Legs (not Toes with the Japanese version)” in Japanese. We have learnt 8 new body words - head, shoulders, knees, legs, eyes, ears, mouth and nose. Foundation students are learning very quickly! We also had fun to make origami (paper folding) cup and fox- kitsune.

You will see a story given by a Year 5/6 students in your child/ren’s bag soon. This is called “Issun Boshi”, one of the traditional Japanese stories. Year 5/6 students have been learning about it and re-writing the ending, creating their own version.
