NAPLAN:

We started off week 7 with our NAPLAN testing. Grade 5 students were assessed on their writing skills, reading comprehension, spelling and grammar and numeracy understandings.

Even though NAPLAN is a snapshot of what students can do, the data gives teachers a greater understanding of strengths as well as areas of focus for future teaching for individuals and cohorts.

Religion:

We have began learning about The Passion of Jesus, the short period of time before his death. Students will compare the similarities and differences between the two Gospels of Matthew and Mark through the characters that are stated, the locations and what happened throughout these stages.

Literacy:

Over the next two weeks, we will be concluding our unit on persuasive writing. Students will begin using the skills and understandings that they have developed to write their own text.

Spelling:

Our Spelling focus this week is the /ti/ making the 'sh' sound as in station.

You may like to practise these words at home with your child.

Numeracy

We have been learning all about fractions recently. Students have been developing their language surrounding fractions and have been using their problem solving skills to work through challenging problems.

Some of the key concepts we have improved are:

  • Fractions are equal sized parts of a whole.
  • The numerator and denominator and what each means.
  • Connecting fractions to decimals and percentages.
  • Recognising that fractions can be partitioned into parts: eg: 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/4 = 1
  • Ordering and comparing fractions on a number line.

Check out this website below, it has some awesome games that you may wish to teach at home.

Mathemagians!

Last Tuesday, 21 nervous but excited Mathemagicians went to the Mercy Centre to challenge themselves with problem solving activities.

We started by investigating a Mobius Strip and discovered that it is possible for a piece of paper to have only one side!!

There were many choices of activities and we could choose which ones we wanted to do! We also got to decide how to work. With a partner, a group or by ourselves. There were some easy and some tricky activities, but we kept going by trial and error to find patterns and get the answers.

The year 3-6 students finished the day by setting up ‘Hide the Spies in the Park’  using chairs for the park benches and hula hoops for trees. The year 1 and 2 students created their own map of a city.

We all agreed that we are looking forward to next term’s event.

Thanks to Mr Saxon for assisting on the day!

School Uniform, Water and Hats

Just a reminder about our school uniform policy.

  • The expectation is that ALL students have their own hat at school with their name on it.
  • Students need to wear green socks and black shoes when we do not have PE or Bluearth.
  • Earrings need to be studs or sleepers.
  • No nail polish or necklaces.
  • White socks and runners on PE and Bluearth days.
  • Hair that reaches the collar needs to be tied back.
  • Only water is to bought to school.

If this is unable to be achieved on a particular day, please write a note or email to your child's classroom teacher.
