Meet our 2024 College Captains

Our 2024 College Captains tell us in their own words what drew them towards being part of the College Student Leadership team, what they hope to achieve as a student representative and why they love being a student here at Surf Coast Secondary College;

SCSC College Captains L-R; Annabel Dean, Lachie Barrie, Saskia Kellett, and Thomas Foster

Saskia Kellett ~ College Captain

"I aspired to become a part of the 2024 College Student Leadership team because I wanted to give a voice to the students at this school. Over my years at the school I noticed a few ways in which I could improve the experience of school for all students, and one way to do this was to become a college captain.

As a student representative I want to create a positive environment where all students feel supported and valued. I hope to encourage students to participate in a sense of pride and connection within the student body and the wider school community.

I love being a student at SCSC because there is always a friendly and supportive member of the school community to turn to for support. In addition, whether your passion is in the arts, sports, humanities or science, there are so many opportunities for a student to take advantage of and broaden their horizons."

Lachie Barrie ~ College Captain

"I always had an aspiration to be school captain and leave somewhat of a legacy, but I decided to put myself forward as a candidate for school captain because I believe that I had the right attributes to lead and represent our student cohort through our final year.

I had gained previous leadership experience from being the captain of my footy team the past season. In that role I was able to motivate my teammates when needed and I also learnt how to overcome adversity.

I also play the guitar, and from when I started playing around 8 years old to the current moment, I have developed a skillset of discipline and attention to detail.  I feel gaining these skills also contribute to being able to handle the duties and responsibilities of being a school captain.

I would like this year to be the start of some traditions at Surf Coast, and seeing the start of a really strong house competition culture like other schools have.

Torquay is lucky to have a high school that offers so many different opportunities with fantastic facilities and of course, our teachers."

Annabel Dean ~ Vice College Captain

"I'd never seen myself as a person who would even apply for a school leadership position. But I decided to see how far I could push myself.  In the process, I have found a passion in leadership and allowing myself to take initiative on tasks I would not have in the past.  I enjoy representing the student body and advocating for all students to actively have a voice in our school community.

As a student representative this year, I hope to achieve a number of things.  In particular, a goal alongside my fellow captains is to have an impact and leave a legacy here at SCSC. Whether it's big or small, I hope we can leave something behind at Surf Coast that has lasting positive impacts within our school community for the years to come.

I love that SCSC has a range of opportunities for all students and their interests/passions at school. Whether its art, music, sport, maths, science or english, SCSC has a place for all of it. Another thing I love about Surf Coast is the student involvement, it's amazing to see students from all year levels participate in decisions that affect our school environment and come up with ideas that create positive repercussions through the school community."

Thomas Foster ~ Vice College Captain

"My name is Thomas Foster and I am excited to be a part of the Surf Coast Leadership team as a Vice Captain.  One of the reasons I wanted to be a school captain was to leave a legacy for other students so people can look back and celebrate their time here at Surf Coast.   I also aspire to be a positive leader that people can trust and turn to, to foster more unity and create a sense of togetherness.

This year I want to create new traditions that are long-lasting, inclusive and encourage participation at all events to build house spirit and create a sense of community.

As a student, I have loved the supportive environment that the teachers and staff have created that allows for students to flourish as they strive towards their goals. I look forward to working with teachers and students alike to continue to help people achieve their goals."

What a great representation of our college! Congrats to our 2024 College Captains.

Year 7 Science

Our Year 7’s have had a great start to Science at Secondary School! Students were eager to participate in practicals and engage in some fun experiments. After learning the safety rules of being in a science lab, the students were ready to obtain their Bunsen Burner Licences. Students were awarded their licence by demonstrating that they could check the gas hose for any damage, attach the gas hose to the gas tap and change from a safety flame to a heating flame. The students were fantastic during their first experiment and should be proud of their newly awarded Bunsen Burner Licence. Congratulations Year 7s!

Year 7 & 8 Technology

The Technology department is buzzing with activity! Students from all year levels are showcasing impressive skills in their respective areas, including Wood Tech, Food Tech. Take a peek at the exciting developments in Year 7, where students are not only cultivating garden beds but also demonstrating their culinary prowess with delicious omelettes.

Meanwhile, the Year 8s are honing their pasta-making skills. These snapshots capture the vibrant learning experiences happening in our classes, reflecting the enthusiasm and dedication of our students.

Year 8 Street Art Workshop with Buff Diss

On Friday 23rd February, we were incredibly fortunate to have the artist Buff Diss come in and do a workshop with each of our Year 8 Art classes. He spoke to them about his journey as an artist, his large mural works and his creative process. He worked with the students to create their own collaborative mural as well as some art techniques they can apply as they start their journey for their own larger work. It was a great day, thoroughly enjoyed by students and art teachers!

Buff Diss began as an artist in the late nineties, with works first appearing on the streets and walls of Melbourne, before emerging in Italy and Berlin and beyond. He is known globally for his pioneering use of tape as a medium and his distinctive line-based aesthetic. Buff continues to develop his approaches as he reinterprets spaces and models artefacts with originality and reference to the environment in which it resides.

NGV International 2024 Triennial

VCE Studio Art and Visual Communication & Design students visited the NGV International 2024 Triennial. The exhibition is a powerful snapshot of the world today, captured through the work of over 100 artists, designers, and collectives at the forefront of global contemporary practice. Bringing contemporary art, design and architecture into dialogue across all four levels of NGV international, the NGV triennial features extraordinary projects that invited students to reflect on the world as it is, while also asking how we would like it to be. It was a whirlwind trip but the knowledge gained from this excursion will inspire students own making and designing and contribute to their research portfolios.

Year 10 'Getting Ready For Work'

Year 10 'Getting Ready For Work' students visiting local businesses to build employability skills. Thanks to Ocean Grind, Zeally Bay Sourdough and Maple Bakery for having us and giving us a great insight to local businesses!

Year 10 Outdoor Education

Students have been busy studying various coastal species during our theory lessons, it was great to head outside and put it all to practice. The class explored Torquay Point rockpools during low tide and found anemones, toadfish, red starfish and crabs. Year 10 ODE is off to a great start!

Year 10 Sports Leadership at BioLAB

Our Year 10 Sports Leadership went to BioLAB to look at the Science of Human Performance.  Students looked at factors that improve force, power and acceleration through a variety of tests and exercises.  Well done to the students who received positive feedback for their group’s participation!

Shout-out to Kokoda Trek Nominees!

We have 3 students, Layla Sheedy, Lily Menhenett & Henry Mackay, who interviewed for Kokoda 2024 last Friday and each were successful.   These students were outstanding in their interviews and will train each week from now until the Trek in September.  A massive congrats to each.

Also, many thanks to the Year 11/12 teachers for the fantastic nominations, especially to Liv Butterworth, who was a great support for the students and provided a valuable insight into each student during the interviews.

Be sure to get around these students and congratulate them if you see them.
