Team Foundation News
Weeks 5 and 6 - A full week of special presentations!
Not only was Week 5 the first full week of school for our Foundation students, it was also a busy two weeks of guest speakers and performances!
On Monday February 26th, FKJ performed a song in front of the Grade One and Two students and teachers at our weekly Mini Meet and Greet, F to 2 gathering. The previous week, Foundation students had made their own paper ants and had also learnt the song called, 'The ants came marching'. The students sang this song with the help of their ants and got a huge round of applause after the performance! Well done FKJ!
Surf Life Saving
On Tuesday February 27th, Rick Cozzio, husband to Mrs Maryanne Cozzio (our Grade 2 teacher), came to BPPS to talk about Surf Life Saving Victoria.
Rick Cozzio has been a volunteer lifesaver for over 30 years at Gunnamatta Surf Life Saving Club. He has also organised and run the Nipper program at the club.
This guest speaker answered two of the essential questions of our Term One Integrated Studies Unit - In Our Community
- What other groups do people belong to in this community?
2. How can I be safe and seek help at school or in an emergency?
Rick shared a great deal of information with the students. He explained how surf life savers rescue people from drowning, where you should swim on a patrolled beach, what a rip is and what to do if you ever get stuck in one.
Rick, thank you so much for this amazing presentation! We all learnt so much and really appreciate you taking the time to come to our school to share this information with us!
After the session, FKJ students returned to the classroom and reflected on what they learned during the session. Below are some of their responses.
Today we learnt this from Life Saver Rick…..
· Life Saver Rick uses a yellow life floatation device to rescue people in a rip – Bella.
· Always swim in between the yellow and red flags – Tida.
· When Life Saver Rick blows his loud whistle he is trying to get people’s attention in the water – Heather.
· If you get into trouble in the water, put your hand up, above your head and wave to get help. – Adrian.
· If there are no yellow and red flags on a beach you should not go swimming in deep water – Chloe.
· To become a life saver you need to go to Life Saving school – Alex.
· Life Savers must be able to swim more than 20 metres – Hannah.
First Aid kits
On Wednesday 6th of March, Antonella Giardina, who works in the BPPS office, came to speak to the students about First Aid kits. She talked about what you might find inside a First Aid kit and how each item can help us. At the end of this week the Foundation students will be making their very own First Aid Kits out of paper and will need to explain how each item in their kit helps us if we are ever hurt.
Thank you so much Antonella for sharing this interesting information with the Foundation students!
