Elissa Wilson and Iris, the Wellbeing Dog

About Me and Iris

This is my first year at Meadows Primary School and I am so excited to be here. I previously worked at Thomastown Meadows Primary School with Mrs Figen, where I was a Year 1/2 Classroom Teacher, Creative Arts Specialist and then Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader (MHWL). At Meadows, I am continuing in the MHWL role, while also supporting with Disability Inclusion. Before becoming a teacher, I worked in the world of Academic Publishing but after having my own three children decided I really needed to be working with kids full time. I have absolutely found my passion in teaching and particularly supporting young people to feel safe and happy at school.

I am so lucky to also be able to bring my lovely dog Iris into the school setting. Iris is a 9-year-old American Labrador who joined our family when she was 15 months old. She had been trained to be a Border Force Dog but had failed her final exams so we were able to adopt her. She is the most gentle dog in the World and as my children grew, I recognised her special ability to calm kids down and support them when needed. So a few years ago, she and I went through special training to have her become a School Wellbeing Dog. She loves it! You should see her tail wag when I tell her it's time to go to work. I am so glad to now be able to introduce her to the Meadows community. I know you will all love her.

Teaching Philosophy

I believe all children have a right to fair and equitable education. I believe in providing a nurturing, calm and caring environment for all children so that school is a safe and productive place. I believe that the education of all children is the responsibility of the whole community and am drawn to work in schools that foster relationships with familiy members, community members and organisations across the wider area. Schools should be inclusive and welcoming for all and I love that Meadows Primary School is a school that lives by this.
