Year 1/2 Classrooms Update

The last few weeks have been full of rich learning experiences across our Year 1/2 classrooms.
In Reading and Writing, students have begun exploring explanation texts. They have been learning the difference between a text that tells us how to do something and a text that explains why something happens. Students have investigated the purpose, structure, and features of explanation texts and have started identifying causes and effects in what they read. They have also been practising using connectives such as because, but, and so to create more detailed sentences.
In Science, students have continued their learning about materials and how they can change. They have been classifying materials according to their properties and conducting simple investigations to test and compare different materials. Students have also explored how materials can be physically changed to suit a purpose and discussed the importance of recycling and reusing materials to help care for our environment.
During our phonics sessions, students have been strengthening their decoding and encoding skills while learning new consonant digraphs, including th and ng. These lessons continue to support students as they become more confident readers and writers.
In Mathematics, students have been developing their understanding of addition and subtraction within 20 using hands on materials, number stories, and part part whole strategies. They have been exploring different ways to solve problems and explain their mathematical thinking. Students have also been learning about 2D shapes aby making, comparing, and sorting shapes according to their features. They have enjoyed identifying shapes in the classroom and the world around them while discussing similarities and differences.
In Wellbeing, students have been learning problem solving strategies and discussing what they can do when faced with challenges. Through class discussions and activities, students have explored ways to solve problems respectfully and make positive choices when interacting with others.
It has been wonderful to see students demonstrating curiosity, resilience, and a willingness to challenge themselves as they continue to grow as learners. We are proud of the effort and enthusiasm they bring to their learning each day.
We are also looking forward to our upcoming DreamCity Incursion next week.
This exciting hands on experience will provide students with opportunities to explore Science, Digital Technologies, problem solving, and teamwork in an engaging and interactive way.
We cannot wait to see the learning, creativity, and excitement that the day will bring.
