Level 2: Connect

Year 2 Newsletter Summary

It has been a wonderful few weeks in Year 2! The students have continued to approach their learning with enthusiasm and determination across all areas of the curriculum. We are incredibly proud of the positive attitude, persistence, and effort they bring to the classroom each day, and it has been pleasing to see their confidence and independence continue to grow.

English

Core Literacy

Students have continued developing their phonics and spelling knowledge through learning the gn sound (as in sign or gnat) and eu sound (as in feud or neutral). They have been practising reading and spelling words with different sound patterns while building confidence to help with reading and writing. Students have also revised prefixes, suffixes and base words, helping them to better understand how words are formed and how meanings can change. In addition, students have been practising finding words that are synonyms/antonyms, identifying syllables in words and revising tricky words to strengthen their fluency, spelling and reading confidence.

Reading & Writing

In Literacy, students have recently moved from studying narratives, procedures and information reports to exploring poetry. Our focus has shifted to the poetry-narrative hybrid novel Fire by Jackie French. This powerful text is inspired by the Black Saturday bushfires and explores the impact of natural forces in Australia, including fire and flood.

Throughout the unit, students will engage in discussions about a range of important themes, including the extremes of fire and flood, the role of fire in the life cycle of Australian flora, and the valuable contribution of volunteers within Australian communities. Using Jackie French’s writing as a mentor text, students will create their own narrative poems, drawing on the author's structure, language features and poetic style.

Maths

In Mathematics, students have been learning about fractions and exploring how whole objects and collections can be divided into equal parts. They have developed their understanding of key fraction concepts, including identifying and creating halves, quarters, and eighths through repeated halving. Students have also been introduced to mathematical language and symbols such as greater than (>) and less than (<), using these to compare and discuss the size of different fractions. Through hands-on activities and problem-solving tasks, students have continued to build their confidence in recognising, representing, and comparing fractions in a variety of contexts.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students have been learning about where we live in Australia and exploring the different types of places people call home. They have investigated why people choose to live in cities, suburbs, regional towns, and rural areas, and the features that make each location unique. Students have compared the services, facilities, and lifestyles available in different communities and developed an understanding of how people's needs and interests can influence where they live.
