Melbourne Zoo Excursion Year 10 Science

The forecast was overcast with advancing showers for May 26, but Melbourne did its usual trick of surprising us, pleasantly, with the sun shining for most of our time with year 10 science students at the Zoo that day.
Our three groups of year 10s were treated successively by the Zoo Education Service's explanation of survival and specific adaptations of the big cats, namely Sumatran Tiger, Snow Leopard and African Lion which students had earlier observed in their enclosures.
Of particular interest was our observation of the endangered snow leopard and its cub. Endangered species support is an overall theme at the zoo and our students gained an understanding and empathy for animals there and under threat in the wild.
Special thanks to Mr. Bonsall, Ms. Sultan and Ms. Brennan who ably guided the students through the day. Two brothers pictured here (lions) sat up on a platform and were clearly visible through the large window of our zoo classroom adjoining the lion's domain.
