Exploring Melbourne through Maps
On Monday 25 May 2026, our Year 11 Foundation Mathematics students took part in the "My Melbourne Tour" excursion, an engaging real-world learning experience designed to bring mathematics to life.
A total of 32 students participated in the excursion under the supervision of Mr Steele and Ms Lal. Students met their teachers at 9:00 am in front of Federation Square before beginning their tours. The weather was ideal for exploring the city, with sunny conditions and temperatures around 20°C throughout the day.
Working in small groups, students explored Melbourne's CBD while creating and following their own themed tours.
Throughout the day, they visited a range of landmarks, cultural attractions, public spaces, and iconic Melbourne locations, collecting photo evidence and recording important mathematical information along the way.
Students applied a variety of practical maths skills, including calculating distances, measuring travel times, reading timetables, converting between 12-hour and 24-hour time formats, and budgeting for transport, food, and other expenses. They also used mapping tools to plan routes and calculate total distances travelled throughout the city.
Following the excursion, students used their findings to create presentations that showcase their tour, explain their mathematical calculations, and highlight what makes Melbourne such a unique and vibrant city.
This excursion provided an excellent opportunity for students to see how mathematics is used in everyday situations while developing teamwork, problem-solving, and planning skills in an authentic setting. The experience encouraged students to connect classroom learning with real-life applications while gaining a greater appreciation of Melbourne's rich culture and attractions.
