5-6 Class

(Ms Murphy)

Our recent Sovereign Hill camp was an unforgettable experience and a wonderful opportunity for students to step back in time and immerse themselves in an important period of Australian history. Rather than simply learning about history, the students became part of the living museum, taking on the role of students attending the Wesleyan Day School and experiencing firsthand what life may have been like during the Gold Rush.

There were many highlights throughout the three days, including exploring the streets, visiting the shops, panning for gold, touring the underground mine and participating in a range of hands-on activities. The Sound and Light Show was a particular highlight. There were audible gasps as history was brought to life through a powerful multi sensory experience that helped students better understand the triumphs, hardships and stories of those who lived through the Gold Rush.

I could not be prouder of the Alvie Grade 5/6 students. They represented our school beautifully, demonstrating outstanding manners, resilience and a willingness to embrace every opportunity. They approached each activity with enthusiasm and purpose, supported one another, showed genuine care for their peers and gave everything a go. Their positive attitude and engagement ensured they gained the very most from this remarkable experience.

The memories, learning and friendships strengthened during our time at Sovereign Hill will stay with us for many years to come.

Mathematics

The results of our recent Multiplication and Division assessments were outstanding. The vast majority of students demonstrated growth between the pre and post assessments, with many making progress equivalent to close to a full year of learning in a relatively short period of time and several students exceeding this benchmark.

These results reflect not only the effort and persistence of students, but also a strong focus on building deep mathematical understanding. Throughout the unit, students were provided with explicit instruction, worked examples, guided practice and ongoing scaffolding. This approach allowed misconceptions to be identified and addressed quickly, ensuring students developed confidence and accuracy before moving on to more complex concepts.

Students should be proud of the confidence they are developing with multiplication facts, problem-solving and division strategies. Their hard work and willingness to challenge themselves are certainly paying off.

Building on this success, we have now commenced a unit on Perimeter and Area. Students will investigate how mathematicians measure the distance around shapes and calculate the space within them, applying their multiplication and division skills to increasingly complex and authentic mathematical problems.

Literacy

This term, we have continued reading Dirrarn, exploring the challenges faced by the characters as they navigate life within a culture very different from their own. Through rich discussion, students have considered themes of belonging, identity, resilience and connection to Country.

Students have also learned about the extraordinary life of Jandamarra, a significant figure in Australian history whose story is one of courage, conflict and resistance. As part of this learning, students completed a factual recount of Jandamarra's life. This was a challenging writing task, requiring students to organise information chronologically and present historical events with clarity and accuracy. Many students produced work of a very high standard and should be proud of their efforts.
